Mermerler Holding, the Turkish distributor of China’s Chery automobiles, has concluded an agreement with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, or COMAC, the state-owned aerospace manufacturer, to sell planes and helicopters to Middle East markets.

Speaking to journalists during the 14th Auto Shanghai 2011, the international automotive fair, Yüksel Mermer, chairman of Mermerler Holding, said the manufacturer of 100- to 200-passenger aircrafts and helicopters is one of the leading aviation companies in China. “COMAC will sell aircrafts and helicopters to Iran, Iraq and other Middle Eastern markets via Turkey,” Mermer said.

With the cooperation, some aircraft components produced in Turkey may be also sold to the COMAC, Mermer said. “Our main target is contributing to Turkey’s exports to China. Aircraft components such as the fuselage and wings can successfully be produced in Turkey. We aim to direct our supply industry in this field to China. We will sell replacement parts to COMAC.”

Mermerler Holding has been conducting talks with the company for three years, he said. “There are three leading companies that produce passenger planes in the world. COMAC is one of them. The company cooperated with another Chinese aviation company, AVIC, and started passenger plane production.”

Officials from COMAC, which holds 10 billion euros in capital, will come to Turkey in the first week of May, according to Mermer.

New distributorships

Commenting about automotive activities of Mermerler Holding, Mermer said Chery commercial vehicles will come to Turkey by the end of the year. Chery has a total of 36 models and Mermerler Otomotiv is planning to bring six of them to Turkey.

“We started distributorship talks with five other automotive companies, except Chery, in China and we already agreed with two of them,” Mermer said, adding that they will not announce the names of these companies before negotiations are finalized.

As Chery’s infrastructure for electric car production is insufficient, the company does not plan to enter the market soon, according to Mermer. “Chery is now working on a low-battery electric car. When it is time, the company will make it public.”

Within the scope of activities in China, the group opened an office in Shanghai, Mermer said.

Domestic production

Commenting on possible domestic automobile production, Murat Mermer, board chairman and director general of Mermerler Otomotiv, said, “A German engine manufacturer wants to cooperate with us for production. It may be a domestic engine. We may reveal our domestic automobile brand with this engine and with support of Chinese automotive companies.”

There is no reason not to produce a domestic automobile, Mermer said. “We are ready with all our possibilities for domestic production, but first bureaucratic obstacles need to be overcome.”
