Turkish economy grew by 8.5 percent last year, data show

Official data announced on Monday showed that Turkey's economy expanded by 8.5 percent last year at fixed prices, on top of the 8.9 percent recorded a year earlier, becoming one of the fastest growing economies worldwide.
The Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) put the economic growth rate for the final quarter of 2011 at 5.2 percent, bringing down the 9.6 percent in the first three quarters to 8.5 percent for the full year. With such growth, Turkey's gross domestic product (GDP) neared the TL 1.3 trillion mark at current prices last year, maintaining the country's place as the world's 16th largest economy. Per capita GDP increased to $10,444, the official bureau of statistics also said.

Turkey's achievements in the field of economic growth have long been on the radar of international observers. With the recently announced 2011 figure, the country has strengthened its weight on the global scene. The Turkish GDP's annual average growth for the 10 years between 2002 and 2011 was 5.4 percent.

I'm happy to see our growth continuing, however I'm interested in knowing which of the areas that are contributing to our growth. Is it industry, agriculture, service until this is clarified I'd be a little more reserved with regards to clapping my hands happily.

We've had experiences in the past where big multinational companies have bought lions share in domestic companies just to drain them so I hope we can avoid something similar. As well as the hot FDI for short term. It's harmful to the economy. I would prefer if they followed a model that punished hot FDI for shortterm.

I heard on the news today that the industry sector growth was about 10% and service/tourism was above 10%, so there is room for optimism :)
One important thing Turkey needs to do is import much less. The import-export imbalance should be one of the main concern for the politicians.

cabuk thanks kemal dervis abi deyin, aci biber sürerim yoksa :partay:

we should solve energy problem immediatly because both high petrol and natural gas price hurts our industry so in 2011 turkey paid 58 billion dollar just for energy therefore we should invest in energy futher including nuclear

Agreed. Solar, wind, hydroelectricity and nuclear energy must be top priority
