Turkish-backed offensive in Sirte turns disastrous despite initial success

BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:45 P.M.) – The battle for the port-city of Sirte appears to be all but over after the Turkish-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) forces suffered heavy losses trying to retake all of the areas they lost this year.

The Government of National Accord forces began the offensive on Saturday by storming several areas under the control of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Backed by heavy strikes from Turkish drones, the GNA was able to capture Al-Washaka and several other areas after an intense battle with the Libyan National Army.

However, these advances would be short-lived, as a swift counter-attack by the Libyan National Army not only drove back the GNA forces, but also inflicted heavy losses in their ranks.

The Libyan National Army reported that several GNA fighters were killed during the battle, including a number of Syrian mercenaries that were transported to Libya from Turkey.

The GNA’s defeat at Sirte came shortly after their forces captured the strategic city of Tarhouna and all of the areas under LNA control in and around Tripoli.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:30 A.M.) – The Libyan National Army’s (LNA) air force bombed a large Turkish-backed military convoy that was traveling along northern Libya this past weekend.

According to reports, the Libyan Air Force bombed the Turkish-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) troops along a highway in northern Libya, resulting in the destruction of several vehicles.

The video (below) shows an attack by the Libyan National Army, which was likely part of their airstrikes between the cities of Sirte and Misrata in northern Libya.

The Libyan National Army and Government of National Accord forces have been trading heavy strikes across northern Libya, as they both strive to gain the upper-hand in the war.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:45 A.M.) – The Libyan National Army (LNA) announced on Saturday that their air defense forces shot down two Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) near the port-city of Sirte.

According to the Libyan National Army’s official Facebook page, their forces shot down two Turkish drones that were aiding the Government of National Accord (GNA) forces in the Al-Washaka area, west of Sirte.

For its part, the Military Information Division of the National Army pointed out that “the army thwarted the attempt by the Turkish-backed reconciliation forces and mercenaries to storm the city of Sirte, earlier in the day.”

They said that “the army forces are chasing the Al-Wefaq (GNA) forces after repelling their attack and inflicting heavy losses on equipment and lives.”

They stressed, “The fighting has moved beyond the administrative borders of the city of Sirte, while the Air Force forces are covering the military operations.”

For his part, the spokesman for the General Command of the National Army, Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, stated that “our forces launched a counter-attack on Saturday, against Al-Wefaq forces in the Al-Hisha area, east of Misrata.”

This comes hours after the forces of the GNA announced the launch of a new operation called Operation “Path of Victory”, with the aim of controlling the areas of Al-Washaka, Buwairat, Al-Hassoun, Jarf, Abu Hadi, Sirte and Al-Jafra.

Disastrous? They pretty much steamrolled up until Sirte with no resistance whatsoever and the LNA pretty much fled. They literally just drove to the cities and captured them. There was no heavy fighting to call it a defeat. After finally encountering some LNA units on the battlefield in a long time, the GNA simply retreated a few hours after they arrived to create a front line. The actual fight is supposed to start in a few days once support arrives.

If however, they fail to take the city after heavy fighting for a month without success, you can call that "disastrous". This Syrian news outlet must be pretty desperate but than again they also claim to have shot down 128 Turkish drones in Libya so far

People thought that this war would end in 6 days, when GNA completely destroyed the siege of Tripoli (Which lasted 15 months) in 72 hours and progressed more than 350 kilometers and even created a dominance over the total size of the UAE.
