Turkey urges Syria to stop crackdown

Turkey, which sees itself as a model for regional democracy, is urging Syrian President Bashar Assad to meet the demands of pro-reform demonstrators as some European powers threaten sanctions if the Syrian crackdown does not ease.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said a delegation is expected to be in Syria on Thursday to convey Turkey's worries as the country's National Security Council — gathering civilian and military leaders — prepares to hear assessments by Turkey's ambassador to Damascus.

The Syrian crisis poses the biggest challenge yet to Turkey's developing trade and political ties with Damascus as part of Turkey's policy to seek "zero-problems" with neighbours.

Erdogan has said Turkey does not want to see an "an authoritarian, totalitarian, imposing structure," in Syria.

I think Turkiye is doing the responsible and mature thing here. Advocating for peace and end to the violent crackdown in Syria and at the same time calling for political reconciliation in Syria. Governments and regimes in the ME are especially paranoid worrying their once docile population is going to overthrow them hence the tough response.

I normally have a slightly favorable view of Pres. Asad though he needs to change directions and end the violent crackdown on protesters, this is extreme and bloody.

After over a year of threats, requests, demands and pleas for Assad to stop butchering his own people, why does he think Assad will oblige this time?
Assad couldn't care less what Turkey wants, because Turkey won't dare use force as long as they have the backing of Iran. Unfortunately...

Its not about daring..Using force is not an option for Turkey, even if it gets backing of Iran..The negative effects of such military intervention are much more crucial for Turkey than positive effects

Pubĺicity, Erdogan loves the attention.

a pan-turkic dreams of ottoman glory again. i hope erdogan places himself between a syrian rebel and a bullet, and the world stands a chance of ridding itself of one or two militants.

You dont seem to understand how complicated this is. This will be a massive war with many countries involved. I think the problem the governments are handling backstage are whether they should take the risk and kick Syrias and Irans **** now or not. Or whether if the international can afford to do it now because Europe has some problems with the economy, Obama wants to get re-elected first and we apparently don't want to do it on our own and frankly why should we?

It is everybody's wish that stability and peace should be restored in Syria. Including of course, Turkey's. This statement just emphasizes this.

That would be acceptable, if Erdogan didn't announce that military options were ready and would be used if Assad didn't stop.
So far the refugees keep piling up in Turkey and Assad keeps butchering Syrians.
