ANKARA: Turkey will go ahead with plans to order a $3.4-billion missile defense system from China, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz said, despite U.S. and NATO concerns over security and compatibility of weaponry.

Yilmaz said in a written response to a parliamentary question published Thursday that Ankara will use the long-range system without integrating it with NATO's system.

Turkey originally awarded the tender to China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp in 2013, prompting U.S. and NATO officials to say the deal could raise questions over security.

Turkey later said it was in talks with France on the issue, but Yilmaz said no new bids had been received.

"The project will be financed with foreign financing. Work on assessing the bids has been completed and no new official bid was received," the minister said.

"The system in question will be integrated with the national system for Turkey's defense and will be used without integrating with NATO," he added.

Eurosam, which is owned by Franco-Italian missile maker MBDA and France's Thales, came second in the tender.

I'm not happy with this but anyway. What was the tipping point?

We cracked down so hard on Uighur separatism that Turkey became afraid PLA will roll into Constantinopol. As a token of their submission to China and Russia alliance, they turn their back on USA and buy our air defence missiles.

hahahaha....

China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp's (CPMIEC) is under sanctions due to deals with Iran & N. Korea. If any Turkish company works with CPMIEC it will also face sanctions.

NATO has paid for 1/2 of Turkiye's Missile Defense and will not allow it's western systems to be integrated with Chinese, because to do so would mean have IFF codes installed on a foreign system.

@Neptune @atatwolf if I'm not mistaken Turkiye doesn't have it's own Integrated Missile Defense System.

Despite its effort to merge into EU Turkey is still somewhat alienated by the West, hence choosing an independent diplomatic policy should better fit its national interests.

You aren't a true Alliance member if you don't share....
Then again, I can see the idea of not putting all eggs in one basket

Pakistan need it also as a shield for area bordering with India.
