Turkey 'has spent $5.5 billion on Syrian community'

  • Turkey has spent $5.5 billion supporting Syrians inTurkey to date, Fuat Oktay, the president of the Turkish Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Administration, has said.

Oktay made the comments Monday at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) as he met representatives of the Donor Support Group.

"The international community has spent $306 million for the Syrians, unfortunately," Oktay said.

He also said a Turkish delegation will visit refugee camps in the Turkish provinces of Gaziantep and Kilis on April 15 and 16, before going on to Lebanon and Jordan, countries which also host Syrian refugees.

    'Great leadership'

Donor Support Group Denmark representative Carsten Ulrich Staur thanked Turkey for its aid to Syrian refugees.

He said: "Turkey has played a great role as a regional actor since the beginning of the Syrian crisis."

He also thanked Oktay for his great leadership on the national and international level and said he hoped Turkey will continue to do a "great job."

The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, also praised Turkey last week for hosting Syrian refugees.

The four-year-old Syria conflict has created an acute refugee crisis, with as many as 3.8 million Syrian refugees currently registered in neighboring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Turkey is currently hosting nearly 1.7 million Syrian refugees, according to the Turkish Development Ministry.

That's a lot of money but then again for a noble cause. I sure hope Syrians don't forget Turkish hospitality in future.

In my opinion it's a huge waste of money. These are the same people that back stabbed us and let the Europeans run amok in the middle east. Our economy shouldn't support stupid charity...

Your sentiment echo our experience of refugees. Your government may not have a choice however. When a conflict rages in your neighbourhood, intentions inevitably turn against neighbours. People love to blame their sufferings on others. This is one of the way to pacify (to an extent) such sentiments. It gives Turkey some leverage over future settlement in the region. Trust we in Pakistan have been through it.

Let's hope it works out for the best. If not our militray can dish out the same medicine the mountain rats have been receiving albeit with a higher dosage:sniper:

As for humanity people say Turkey did the right thing after all but the truth is none of those syrians will remember what we have done and how much we have spent for them, in the first class refugee camps they still complain about simple stuff as we have to serve them just like they stay in five stars hotels. The others who live in the city instead of camps have already ruined the social balance of Hatay and many other cities. Their behaviour and adoptation abilities to a new order and culture are below average ( They don't even try ) which cause problems with locals, there are security issues with syrian refugees. I don't say we should have left them behind but at least we have should not let them in Turkish cities and there must have been established and international refugee fund to share our burden. Why we have to spend $ 5.5 alone? Why those so called western communities don't even lift their finger? All we hear is "Well done turkey, Good going, Keep it up! Fvck you UN and UNSC!

.
And all we got in return is dirty Smear Campaign and moral speeches from people who didnt even lift a finger for Syrian refugees.
In the end we are humanitarian and did the right thing.

In the end we bled our economy for no tangible reason. The costs have to be decreased, we can't be a charity case forever

There isnt much that we can do right now, we have to wait till the war is over so Syrians can return, you have to feed those people or you will have much worse problems which again will hurt economy even more.

Put a majority of them across the border. Mount snipers, lockdown the border and declare it a military zone. Move necessary military assets to the area. Engage all hostiles. Trust me it would cost way less than 5.5 $ billion
