Turkey evacuates nearly 15 thousand from Libya
Turkey had evacuated so far nearly 15 thousand people, including Turkish citizens and foreign nationals, from Libya, Turkish FM Davutoglu said

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Saturday said Turkey had evacuated so far nearly 15 thousand people -- including Turkish citizens and foreign nationals -- from Libya.

"Evacuation efforts are underway as planned and so far Turkey has evacuated 14,776 people, of which 579 are foreign nationals," Davutoglu said after an Istanbul meeting with leaders of a peace initiative from Iraq's Tal Afar city.

Davutoglu said two Turkish frigates, TCG Iskenderun and TCG Orucreis, set sail from Libya's Benghazi port with 517 people from 25 countries on board.

"There are 208 Vietnamese, 99 Bosnian, 34 Macedonian, 31 Korean, 30 Serbian, 44 Syrian and other country nationals on these two frigates," Davutoglu said.

Turkey's foreign minister says the country has evacuated all the Turkish citizens who wanted to leave Libya -- some 18,000 in total.
Ahmet Davutoglu's comments Monday signaled that Turkey's largest ever evacuation operation was winding down.
Two Turkish frigates brought back more than 1,700 people to Turkey's Mediterranean port of Marmaris late Sunday and a C-130 military transport plane airlifted another 132 early Monday.
As well as the 18,000 Turks, Turkey evacuated close to 600 foreign nationals.
Turkey had up to 30,000 citizens in Libya, mostly working in construction projects, before the trouble began.
Davutoglu said Turkey was preparing to send humanitarian aid to Libya.

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- President Barack Obama spoke with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday about the violence in Libya, the White House said.

The two leaders discussed ways to hold the Libyan government "accountable" for its actions, according to a White House statement about the conversation.

The men "agreed on the importance of providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Libya," the statement said.

They discussed their concerns about the violence, affirmed the rights of the Libyan people and "discussed appropriate and effective ways for the international community to immediately respond," the statement said.

The U.S. has been seeking an international consensus on sanctions or other actions aimed at pressuring the Libyan government and ending the bloodshed. It has faced some criticism for being slow to act.

Obama and Erdogan also "discussed the range of options that both the United States and Turkey are considering to ensure the security of our citizens in Libya" in light of fatal clashes between government supporters and anti-government protesters in the North African nation, the statement said.

The dialogue between the two countries will continue and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu when she travels to Geneva on Monday, the White House said.
