TTP, Lashkar-e-Islam Fight in Khyber Agency

Gunner - I'm simply pointing to facts, the lack of success.

I wouldn't call it lack of success. Again, i give the example of Swat Op. You need to see it in the right perspective. Two years ago, these groups ran their own fiefdoms in the tribal areas. Take the example of Bajaur. Pakistani forces had never set foot in many parts of the agency since 1947. And these terrorists were growing influence in settles parts of KPK. That's not the case anymore. I won't term it a failure.

Either there are many many times more the terrorists the government claims there are or such operations are not designed to permanently decapitate and disrupt such groups - I mean these are but the obvious implications, right?

It's not the numbers that matter. It has been proven that these groups won't stand to fight in regular combat. They only fight pitched battles when either their main nerve centres are threatened or when cornered. South Waziristan is an example.

Now, there still remains North Waziristan and parts of Orakzai which remain to be cleared. These are right now their main hubs. I don't know why troops aren't moving. Lack of resources or as they say they are over-strecthed already.

But, now these people are striking through urban networks. This is hard to counter. Obviously we need to get at their safe ground. But we also need solid intel networks to grab hold of their sleeper cells, source of funds and human resouce supply chain. These people have sympathizers, You can see many ont his very forum. Many are educated and resourceful. It's a long battle in which these people have the advantage of initiative and surprise. But i agree that many questions remain unanswered.

No one is challenging our boys grit - but if these terrorists can't be handled, you want Pakistanis to be persuaded that they can be kept safe from the Indian??

Again, this is very different from a conventional threat. This is the enemy within. It cannot be treated like a conventional enemy and more importantly it is hidden and only shows itself when it wants to.

So, more like the target lists the US have?

. .
Assassination - taking out the key nodes - decapitating and disrupting - unless of course some of these are the favorites of particular politicians and/or intelligence asset

.
Why not start arming one faction against other turn by turn..this wil kill both sides with single arrow.

.
We've done that before and it's failed - why would any of these people want to trust us and we will have to kill the same people we would arm.

The answer is not to arm them but to disarm them - and anyway, these people have to be brought into the 21st century, whether they like it or not, and of course they would have to be given the same rights as other citizens, no more ruling through surrogates, these people must have full political rights.

.
The ‘jaggaas’ from each party are fighting for their personal interests but they’ve given the Islamic names to their ‘lashkars’.
Such Munafiq losers they are!

TNSM chief’s trial delayed for non-availability of evidence

* An official says govt is taking no interest in the trial of the TNSM chief and there is a possibility that he will once again be released through an agreement

By Akhtar Amin

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has delayed the trial of banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Sufi Mohammad after the prosecution department failed to produce solid evidence and witnesses against him, Daily Times has learnt.

Official sources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Home and Tribal Affairs Department revealed that first the TNSM chief’s trial was delayed due to security reasons and Taliban’s threat to anti-terrorism judge and it was decided to run his trial in Central Prison Peshawar. But, the sources added, the provincial government was now delaying his trial due to non-availability of witnesses and solid evidence against him.

“The government is taking no interest in the trial of TNSM chief and there is a possibility that he once again be released through an agreement,” an official told Daily Times on condition of anonymity.

Two months ago, the provincial government had delayed the trial of Sufi Mohammad due to security reasons and Taliban’s threats to Swat anti-terrorism judge Asim Imam. The provincial home department reviewed its decision to produce Sufi Mohammad and other key terrorists in Swat anti-terrorism court and approved trial of TNSM chief and other key terrorists by a judge of anti-terrorism court in the prison.

The anti-terrorism court judge was scheduled to start Sufi’s trial in various cases on July 20 in the prison, but the trial could not resume on the scheduled date.

Sufi Muhammad is facing charges of sedition, conspiring against the state and encouraging terrorism. There are also a host of other charges against him including Section 302 and 324 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Last year, the ANP-led provincial government had pinned all hopes for peace on Sufi Muhammad and withdrew all cases lodged against him, but he rejected the superior courts of the country declaring them as un-Islamic and denounced democracy and the Constitution.

His April 19, 2009 address to a massive gathering at Grassy Ground in Mingora ended all hopes for peaceful resolution of the problems in Swat and rest of Malakand and emboldened the Swat militants.

His address brought serious consequences for him. The military launched an operation in his native Maidan area in Lower Dir on April 26, 2009.

On June 4, his Amandarra headquarters in Batkhela was raided and his deputy Maulana Muhammad Alam and spokesman Amir Izzat were nabbed. Sufi Muhammad then went into hiding, but in late July 2009, he showed up in Sethi Town of Peshawar and was arrested in the same month.

I wouldn't take it as a credible story. For two reasons. One, Daily Times is not one of the best investigative papers. Second, the reporter has not told us what the provincial government's official response is. He should have talked to some on from prosecution dept and provincial govt's law minister. Why didn't he? It's easy to accuse someone.

Personally, i wouldn't be surprised if it was to be true. Sufi Muhammad has been ANP's guy for long now. He was the main man who attempted on behalf of agencies to bring peace in Swat but he got sidelined by his own power hungry son-in-law. I don't think Sufi Muhammad poses a threat any more to anyone.

I see - the law does not need to apply to ANP types - and Mangal Bagh was once ANP too, I note - so we may expect similar treatment for him as well -- and I thought you were serious about the sacrifices of our boys.

This is why neither Pakistanis nor the world believe that security forces are sincere in their efforts.

You don't get it. He isn't ANP. He was supported by the ANP because of his moderate stance. Just like the US is trying to do it in Afghanistan. What's wrong with it if ANP tried it in Swat. Ofcourse the attempt failed because the Radio Mullah won't give in. We all know what happened next.

And Mangal Bagh was never associated with the ANP.

Oh, well then, it's OK, good and fine.

There are no "Moderate" religious fanatics -- but in Pakistan, and especially among her security forces, it seems this is not as yet understood -- it may take a good number more suicide attacks and dead soldiers and civilians for that reality to sink in.
