Trump says U.S. tariffs could be applied to Chinese goods worth $500 billion

WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Thursday the United States may ultimately impose tariffs on more than a half-trillion dollars’ worth of Chinese goods as the world’s two largest economies hurtled toward the start of a trade war.

Trump confirmed that the United States would begin collecting tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods at 12:01 a.m. Washington D.C. time (0401 GMT) on Friday and warned that subsequent rounds could see tariffs on more than $500 billion of goods, or roughly the total amount that the United States imported from China last year.

“You have another 16 (billion dollars) in two weeks, and then, as you know, we have $200 billion in abeyance and then after the $200 billion, we have $300 billion in abeyance. Ok? So we have 50 plus 200 plus almost 300,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Trump’s comments appeared to increase the stakes for potential retaliation by China. Previously, Trump had threatened up to impose additional tariffs on goods worth $400 billion should China follow through on its plans to retaliate against the initial U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods including autos, computer disk drives, pump and valve parts and light-emitting diodes.

This is great news for China! Before the end of the year, all trade with US will end and then we can finally sever diplomatic ties! We can finally undo the mistakes of the past several decades and go back to being a socialist paradise!

Before encounter western nations in 17th century, China used to set the rule in the region and reign as first world economical power in eastern paradise. In 20th and 21th China know how to adapt quickly to the world economy and rules set by western nations to climb up as word 2nd economic power in just over 40 years time lapse, we certainly don't lack of ideas or imagination to set a new world economic order or create a new paradise.

China will get royally screwed. Keep watching.

When US initiate the trade war, China has no choice but respond. China might come out as loser but all the world nation has been waiting to see a rise nation that can stand up to US and watching that China's respond to US's trade war with great interest: If China withstand US's economic war then no nations on earth will stand at submissive position to US.

Remember this: crisis is equally an opportunity to all Chinese, you Indians will never understand, better stay at your submissive position, you guys are not meant to rule but to be ruled.

main issue is.... china is blocking US firms from competing in number of strategic industries the inequality of market access has driving the wast trade deficit between both ... hence america wants china to open its markets to balance the trade .. while china is reluctant due to economic and political challenges therefore it is resisting, last year china exported 462 billion $ of goods and services to america and america exported 115 billion $, no country exports as much as china export to america so most likely china will blink first

Well, good luck with that. Got nothing to say, other than live in the present when needed. History cannot always back you, and mind you in the 17th Century, there wasn't a United States of America. See how things changed in just 200+ years. :-) I don't really see any shift in power balance towards China.

Actually, the one who gets burned will be the one who has more surplus. I read your compatriots making comments like stop all the trade. You realize it'll be $1 trillion loss in some 2-3 years just counting the surplus.
Trump is a simple-minded guy. He only see's things from a transactional perspective. The one who will submit will be none other than China. The fact that, your own economic woes cannot sustain a trade war with the US. Trump knows it, Xi knows it. Even your media houses know it, as they used to make articles day in day out about how a trade war will be bad for the US.

When I brought up the 17th story to merely say that China know how to create their own paradise, nothing else. Off course today's economy is more complex than in 17th century but we still manage to get to 2nd world economic power in short period of time.

As for the on going trade war, China has no choice but to respond when facing the intentional threat, I don't think India will not do anything different when facing US's trade war. And I said once again I don't know the outcome of this trade war but crisis is also an opportunity for China, if China manage to withstand US on this issue, the entire world will look up on China and they will not be at the submissive position to US, China's prestige on international stage will greatly enhanced...do you realize how much China will gain out of this...you can't simply measure by economic scale.

Donot be so happy. We may lose but USA has much interest in Chinese market too, last year, they earn more than 300billion US dollars in Chinese market, we also can hurt USA badly. During the past three decades, we sacrificed much national interest to USA, especially open much market to USA. If trade war go on, USA companies will gradually expel outside , so it is hard to say the future. Trade war is not good but also not bad thing, especially we will rank 1st consumer market in the world. Moreover, do you think India can become an exception? USA will talk about trade terms one by one, good luck.
