I think he wanted Iran to attack some US base in gulf and start a inter Islamic war. This way their both enemies will destroy each other.

It was Iran's wise decision to attack US bases in Iraq and not in gulf.

May be if Iran uses proxies in west Asia to hurt US we might achieve partial peace in Muslim world.
