I thought Japan and south Korea already had unfettered access to high tech weopons from U.S

The past U.S mistakes do cost a lot in future.Although the Korea war was not entirely U.S fault as I recall.I think China was so a party to blame

Limited amount, the US didn't want to antagonize China or upset any perceived balance.

You might have missed the part where the International Community sanctioned the sovereignty of S. Korea.

Nonsense, that didn't stop US from deploying THAAD in SK. The real reason is that the US doesn't allow the most sophisticated weapons to be sold. F-22 is not for sale, even selling some AB destroyers to Japan are watered down versions. Now tell me is the US willing to sell nukes or even the railgun once it's operational to SK or Japan? Or how about some hypersonic missiles?

Different scenario. The US didn't want to cross the DMZ into N. Vietnam.

The Chinese had already pushed the US and co back from the Yalu River. Wouldn't have helped to get to the Red River and then get pushed back.

I will come back after i have read a bit on it. As far as i remeber N.K invaded S.K.UN and U.S invaded , China intervened , ceasefire declared...DMZ created.

After what happened in Korean War, the US was smarter this time not to cross that line in Northern Vietnam.
The first time US did not listen to China's warning not to cross the Yalu. When China warned the US in the Vietnam War Americans knew better.

if US didn't want to antagonize China and Russia , it would not deploy THAAD. US doesn't care about upsetting the balance. Look at NATO crouching closer to Russia, US too playing the containment game in SCS. This time they have the perfect excuse because of DPRK's missile advancement.
