Tourism in sharp decline since Dhaka terror attack

Tourism industry experts say the killing of foreign nationals at the Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 has been a huge blow to the industry
The number of tourists visiting Bangladesh has dropped drastically since the terror attack at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, Dhaka last July.

Within four or five months of the terrorist attack, Bangladesh had almost no tourists arriving from either Japan or Italy. Although the situation has improved since, tour operators say that the current numbers reflect a mere 20% of the normal in-flow of tourists, especially from those countries.

Tourism industry experts say the killing of foreign nationals at the Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 has been a huge blow to the industry. Hundreds of tourists from different countries have canceled their visits to Bangladesh since then.

Tour Planners Limited Managing Director Faridul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune that some 700 Japanese tourists engaged their services last year, but post the Gulshan terror attack, only about 150 Japanese tourists have sought their services.

Each year, a total of 5,000 to 6,000 Japanese tourists used to visit Bangladesh. The Gulshan attack changed that scenario completely, according to Md Masud Hossain, the executive director of Bengal Tours Limited.

“Over the past year, only 1,000 tourists came to Bangladesh. As the arrivals from Japan declined, 16 tour guides who would have handled the Japanese tourists, have quit. The overall slump in tourism has caused a total of 15 tour guides adept in other languages to also quit,” lamented Masud.

Riverain Tours Limited CEO Syed Mahbubul Islam Bulu is one of the major in-bound tour operators in Bangladesh. His main market is Italy.

Everything about West Bengal is on the rise.

While everything about Bangladesh is on the decline.

What to do?

I know - don't even think of coming back. We don't need fifth columnists.

Good riddance. Adios. Ciao. Hasta La Vista. Walaikum Tafat.

We don't mind temporary reduction of foreign tourist.Foreign tourist is a small part of tourism industry in BD. Our internal tourism sector is booming which matter most.Foreign tourist arrival will rise eventually. It will take time. Our tourism infrastructure is still rudimentary which is being strengthen by the rapid development of internal tourism. We need to fix Dhaka, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar before marketing Bangladesh abroad.Current spending on urban infrastructure project will help.

So what would you have him do? Not mention inconvenient facts? Or selectively mention facts that suit your narrative? Will the facts change?

Suppose he was to forward an article that falsely claimed that foreign tourism arrival was increasing, would that achieve some positive result? Or if he didn't post the thread at all, would that increase the tourist flow to Bangladesh?

There are so many nations which are facing dwindling international tourism due to terror attacks. Turkey, France are among them. People take that decision independent of any positive coverage that is aimed at putting a positive spin to the situation.

Learn to face facts for a change instead of trying to use the internet to bend reality to your convenience.

@Bilal9 bhai what do think?

I am afraid that reality is slightly different. Income from tourists might not be a big revenue earner in BD, but many foreigners come to BD for business. In fact, that is the only type I know of. If I am not mistaken, some of those killed in the Dhaka bakery attack were overseas businessmen.

The current wave of terror attacks is far more selective in its targets. Notice the list of targets in London, Istanbul and Paris. They selectively attack where it hurts. In the case of BD, that is not leisure tourist arrival, but the prospect that many overseas businessmen will be discouraged from coming to BD at all.

The aim is the same in a cases - degrade economic vitality. They hope that this will further create the ground situation that will fuel resentment and alienation in youth, by being denied economic opportunities. This will be a breeding ground for indoctrination, thereby achieving their long-term goals. These are not people who play for short-term stakes.

There is a quota for a tourism thread every month.

You do make some valid points but you are in no position to claim the moral high ground or anything else for that matter, so stop lecturing please.

The point is this- in every country, including Bharat, there's a collection of good and bad news as always.

The OP is a propagandist known for selectively posting bad news threads about Bangladesh, painting Bangladesh in a bad light consistently on a weekly basis.

This behavior is typical of some Bhartiya posters in the Bangladesh section.

You won't find any Bangladeshi posters doing this in the Indian forum, the difference is awkat and class, I'm afraid. Although plenty of opportunity exists to make life difficult for you guys. :-)

The difference is that we have some shame to engage in that sort of behavior.

Nowhere in the world will you find a country like India, whose per capita GDP happens to be double of ours, to have active hatred for a much smaller country like Bangladesh. It is reflected in every action your Govt. Takes.

So go lecture your posters or Mr. Loafer over here, or Nilgiri, both of whom we've been putting up over the years.

And people wonder why Bangladeshis possess low opinions of Indians.....

Indeed - internal tourism is probably 90% plus at this point.

Your arguments are based on totally superfluous assumptions. Firstly, you are mistaken in assuming that I challenge your post due to some innate wish to malign BD. Although it does not affect the accuracy if the point I am making, yet, If you can find even one post that I have made in which I say anything negative about Bangladeshis in general or as a country, I will apologize and withdraw from the discussion. A neutral observer can clearly ascertain that I wish nothing but the best for BD.

Secondly, you seem to be harboring this notion that I would jump to defend my country even though the point made is accurate. I have no such misplaced sense if patriotism. I try and evaluate arguments on merit. You will not he able to rile me up by bad-mouthing India all day long - it does not matter to me. If your point is correct, I will accept it, and if I feel it is not so, I will explain why that is so. Sometimes I may use ascerbic language but that is only if I feel that the initial post has been made in bad faith, and not because I get angry about you trying to malign my country.

Thirdly, the reason I have this approach applies equally to you and anyone else as well. Unless we are able to evaluate arguments on merit, and not on emotional appeal, we will never be able to sort out good ideas from bad ones.

Take the present thread for instance. You have not even tried disputing the assertion made by the OP. Instead, you have suggested that starting any thread which is not agreeable to you is a wrong thing, even when it is factually correct. That is an absurd position, and I would go to the extent as to say shows a fascist bent of mind.

Why do some people believe that by denying self-evident things they are doing themselves and their country a favour? When has hiding the truth (in a public context) ever served such a purpose?

My patience to harp on about circular arguments is wearing thin, so please consider this my last post about this with you.

Your objectivity and impartiality is irrelevant to the discussion at hand, which you skirted skillfully. These are noble qualities, nonetheless we are discussing the practice of simply starting slanderous threads about bad news in Bangladesh or posting negative comments in our section of the forum, which is a habit with the OP. In fact most of this guy's posts are about Bangladesh, and 100% of them are negative about Muslim countries or Muslims themselves. Your talk about being objective is a farce to these people whose grammar and spelling is in question. Starting threads about something in Bangladesh is relevant only when improvements can be discussed. The OP is a known religious bigot and his only objective in posting these threads is to troll and establish his bigotry, not improve anything.....

When you are legitimizing his posts as valid, you are supporting his bigotry. But that was sort of a foregone conclusion anyhow.

Can we have him find an avenue other than PDF to propagandize how bad things are in Bangladesh - a Muslim majority country, which he clearly despises?

It is possible to start slanderous threads about many negative subjects regarding India, but we have better things to do in the Bangladesh forums.

It takes a special kind of idiot to hang out in another country's forum all week and bad mouth them consistently by obsessing over and opening negative threads about that country. Such people from India are unfortunately legion in the Bangladesh section of PDF.

@Manticore , @waz , @WAJsal bhai kindly look into this issue.

So three things can and may happen,
  1. Bangladeshis will leave PDF in disgust. This won't help us and we don't see this happening.
  2. Bangladeshis will abide by forum rules but will go to Indian forums and start slanderous threads over there. Just like this one started here by Loafer and goaded on by GSLV AND NILGIRI. The cycle of mudslinging started by Indian posters in the Bangladesh area ( the same ones who thanked your post above) will continue in the Indian section, tit-for-tat. We will see what the Indian reaction is then.
  3. Unfortunately option 2 will bring the quality of the forum down and the quality visitorship as well. Defence experts will probably stop visiting this forum because objective discussion will cease to exist, we will simply have a bunch of mudslinging posts with no practical value to anyone..

As if there aren't any there.

This news article was published in dhakatribune and has quoted tour operators from Bangladesh. I have no idea why anyone would have any problem about posting this news here, was this forum is originally dedicated to circle-jerking ? @Loafer

This guy is badly obsessed with few INDIAN posters and when his super power Bangladeshi claims always bashing India discreetly are challenged, he will start crying whining when it's time to surrender. I have already given up on him since last 6 months. Ask @Nilgiri about his experience with him.

Fair enough. Let us agree to disagree and end this discussion. I would like to outline a few points, not as a retort to anything said by you, but as general points for future reference:

1. Factual accuracy is a perfectly valid defence against claims of slander.
2. If the facts are accurate, the motive becomes irrelevant.
3. Tenuous correlation between a consistent line of criticism with the fact that it is being made about Muslim-majority nations is not tantamount to bigotry. That is simply a tactic employed to stifle discussion.
4. Regardless of whether the intent of starting a thread is to provoke or insult, it can always be directed towards a productive exchange. The onus to do so is on everyone.

.
Heh nice temper tantrum.

@Bilal9 there is such a thing as GHQ man....you dont need to air out the pent up rage on the very subforum you claim you want to shield/protect/preserve...whatever.

Stop being your own worst enemy so brazenly....or don't. Choice is yours.

If people follow the rules within the greater freedom of speech envelope...you simply signal you have lost the argument by engaging in these theatrics.
