the census data show that the lowest TFR in 2011 was 1.51 in Natore and the highest TFR was 3.45 in Sunamganj suggesting a difference of about 2.0 children per woman. Overall, the 2011 Census data show that 31 districts had fertility below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman and 33 districts had fertility levels above the replacement level.

What is apparent from the map is that relatively wealthier areas (agriculturally as well income-wise) have more of a TFR? Cox's Bazaar can be excepted I guess.

Religious conservatism may also be a factor.

Anything below 2 is below replacement level and will result in decrease of population over time. Which is unprecedented in the subcontinent except Sri Lanka and Bhutan.

I'm sure as education and health indicators have improved recently six years later, the TFR rate will go down even further...

Maybe one of the Sylhoti-bhais can confirm - but I believe Sylhet is a more conservative Muslim area as well.

The conservatism results in women probably not working outside, hence the TFR will be on the higher side.

A double whammy is also having BBS write off some deaths in sensitive age groups as never having been born. This would help to pad statistics to create lower birth rates and lower fertility rates than actually on the ground, especially given the clear prevalence of child marriage and teenage pregnancy in BD compared to the region:

Pakistan's figures: Child marriage is 13.1% and teen pregnancy birth rate is 38.3.

SL figures: Child marriage is 6% and teen pregnancy birth rate is 14.2.

Myanmar figures: 12.6% and 16.2

Nepal figures: 27.1% and 71.3

What is shocking is BD does worse than even Afghanistan @madokafc @Gibbs @django @Areesh @Valar. :

Afghanistan child marriage = 19.7%, Teen pregnancy birth rate = 71.2

Sunamganj is one of the poorest region in bd due to geography. They remain under water 6 months of the year and access to education is limited. It has nothing to do with conservativeness. Moulvibazar is the most affluent and conservatve dist in sylhet yet has the lowest TFR.

Sunamganj is my district and thana. It's most likely because the people of those areas are conservative and many of those people from Sunamganj in the UK marry within their own families and have 7+ kids. The village of Shaharpara in Sunamganj most of the people are related through one man - Shah Kamal Quhafan. So if you tread in that area do not be surprised if they call bear the surname "Kamaly/Kamali". It is technically a tribe of interrelated people.

In fact Bengalis had a stereotype of breeding to many back then. Somalis have taken that rep now - not a bad thing. Demographic increases.

Having covered quite a bit of Bangladesh. You can see the major gap in how Rural Sylhet is compared to most places in the country. Places like Zakiganj and Karimpur and the entire Sunamganj, Molvibazar districts are alive during Waz seasons. Jalsa's left right and centre!

It's disgusting that "progressive" Bangladesh has twice the child marriage prevalence of Afghanistan and significantly higher teenage pregnancy rate (in contrast to the fertility rate it somehow concocts for the entire population thanks to BBS trickery and illegal immigration of lower social strata).

Of course you wont reply (switching to Bengali among your groupthink-STRONK selves as though that will help) because it unsettles the narrative....wailing that its ramzan and to ignore isnt going to make the inconvenient facts go away.

I'd like to see one person attempt to rationally explain this claimed TFR of BBS validity given post number 7. Can really both sides of that hold at same time? Which is more sensitive to domestic propaganda manipulation?
