what is a smart city

if you all were ti choose to live in a smart city - what all do y9u expect in a smart city ?

lets begin from here than see wether what govt is developing / proposing fits the bill

A smart city (also smarter city) is an emerging conceptual view of a city that promotes the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to engage with citizens to develop social capital and intellectual capital, to make better use of hard infrastructure (physical capital), reduce usage of environmental capital and support smart growth (sustainable economic development). The inclusion of social and environmental capital distinguishes smart cities from the more technology-laden terms of digital city and Intelligent city.

Things that makes a smart city-
Smart parking. There will be systems that will alert drivers when there is a free parking spot. Citizens will no longer waste their time looking for a place to park and the city will be less polluted. Did you know that by reducing the average time required to park a vehicle from 15 to 12 minutes can reduce CO2 emissions by 400 tonnes in a city such as Barcelona?
Intelligent transport system. You probably won’t have to wait to take advantage of this feature. Many public transport systems are already interconnected. This allows for different public transports to be coordinated and to provide information in real time.

Tele-care. Some medical consultations will no longer be necessary. There are monitorization systems for patients which keep their doctor up to date when something such as a rise in blood pressure or sugar occurs.

Traffic management. Monitoring road systems will inform drivers about which route is best at any given time. Also, it will automatically manage the traffic lights in order to reduce congestion to the minimum taking into account the traffic volume at certain times of the day.

Smart grids. They will provide the necessary amount of electricity depending on the demand. This way the power efficiency will be maximized. There are some cities that are testing these systems, as Málaga, for instance.

Smart urban lighting. Why waste energy if nobody is on the street? Smart urban lighting will adjust the intensity of the light depending on the people who are around.

Waste management. Not all places generate the same kind or the same amount of waste. With smart containers and a good fleet management system, the routes can be tailored to any situation. Thanks to this kind of solution, the efforts in waste collection will be much more efficient.

Smart city maintenance. Citizens will now be able to rely on systems to notify the City Council of any damages in the urban elements through their smartphones. This way things will be repaired faster.

Smart taxi. Taxi fleet will be connected and customers will be able to book a taxi with an application. The localization system will notify the closest one without the need of human interaction. There are already some mobile applications for taxis, such as My Taxi.

Digital-signage. Urban ads will be tailored to each citizen and advertising will provide services. Whereas now we see many concert posters around the city, in the future the customer will have the chance to actually buy the ticket via the billboard.

what is a smart city

if you all were ti choose to live in a smart city - what all do y9u expect in a smart city ?

lets begin from here than see wether what govt is developing / proposing fits the bill

efficient control of traffic with monorails & BRTS to share burden .

good network off CCTV coverage and monitoring centers for better security .

well planned drainage system to keep the city clean just like the one they have in chandigarh .

check electricity theft and tank mafias that we see in delhi and mumbai .

as mentioned above there should be enough greenery to check pollution

any commercial developer should be given licence based on an agreement on congestion free parking space , CCTV cameras in building and multiple fire exits .

police force should not be the old school type , good presence ATM centers and WIFI at bus and railway stations .

a common help line center , something similar to just dial .

a much futuristic approach would be to regularly keep track of population of the city and control immigration but that can be put on a back burner for the time being .

I don't agree with London, high on population, the tube network sucks,it gets very hot and the air conditioning is also not good. There are a lot of pigeons which cause diseases.Navigation in London is difficult,as cabs are costly, London is very big, areas like Brixton have a high crime rate.East London is very underrated than western London. Moreover London Is very costly u need a lot of quids.
These are my personal views. No offence though.
London being on the list made me laugh! Thankfully I don't live in that dirty, smelly, overcrowded hellhole! Berlin, Copenhagen and Barcelona are all FAR more habitable and pleasant to visit.

Not sure about the other cities listed, but I have lived in Toronto for quite a while. If by "smart city", they mean "industry is going down the drain, leaving only light starter companies that worked purely because they don't need so much starting capital", then it would be perfectly right.

well guys what you are saying smart city - but what govt is planning is smart pockets - 20000 Sq mtrs cant be termed as smart city

this is a land builder politicos benefit scheme dont bet on i t

when the 20000sq mtr will be developed as smart pocket - the areas outside and adjoining will be worst congested in terms of infra overload - to benefit those within 20000 sq mtr our tax money will be used to provide them better infra

the best solutions is forget Making Smart city/pockets - let markets decide

Wow, This is first time someone tagged me. Thanks for that!

My company is bidding for Smart City project with our PM but not finalized yet. The first thing is that smart city does not mean skscrappers but effective utilization of resources so OP, your first part does not match with other details. Those who want to understand here is link from IBM.

IBM TheSmarterCity - United States

Also, in my opinion India does not need smart city concept for current metros but upgrading at least 10 cities to Metro level.

India has no need for this since their white servants will take over most of menial jobs for Indian in 2030.
