Rohith Vemula, the Dalit scholar from Hyderabad Central University who took his own life on January 18th, wanted to write about the stars. His mind was a 'glorious thing made of stardust', whose proof he left in his last letter to the world. In life, his education - a chunk of it financed by his mother's earnings as a tailor - was an act of rebellion. In death, he blazed a trail on Dalit rights, whose brightness refuses to be ignored. By the media, by the bureaucracy, by the Internet and by me.

I was born in a Dalit family in Ajmer, Rajasthan. And I grew up learning to hide it. My convent school education, a non-Dalit sounding last name, and a skin color that was 'dusky but still not dirty' eased my passing as a non-Dalit. "Beta, what caste are you from?" "Aunty, Brahmin." A lie I spoke so often and with such conviction, that I not only fooled my friends' mothers but even myself. But I couldn't fool the shame that spread my face each time someone mentioned 'caste', 'reservation', 'bhangi' - the common slur, which loosely translates to a human scavenger and the name of my exact caste. 'This time, they'll find out', I had thought when the undergraduate college I attended tucked my name under the SC/ST quota or when I submitted my birth certificate for my first job at an ad agency. Some did find out, some didn't. Most didn't care. The ones who did (a friend, who along with her parents witnessed my first public admission of being 'low-caste' at 15) stopped being in touch. But I always cared. I cared enough to lie about my caste and to create elaborate backstories to protect that lie. I conveniently forgot the last name my grandfather dropped to allow him to pass, almost 60 years ago - Nidaniya.

Until today when I visited Rohith Vemula's posthumous Facebook page. And realized that he had sent me a Facebook request ten days ago, which I had promptly ignored. Maybe he saw some Dalit right groups I had liked and wanted to reach out.

And reach out he did. He made me 'come out' to the people I grew up hiding from, wanting to fit in with. He made me recognize that my history is one of oppression and not shame. He made me acknowledge that my great grandfather learned to write by scrawling a stick in the mud because the higher caste schoolteacher forbade him from holding a slate. And he made me proud.

I know I am not alone to feel this. There are many of us whose experiences of growing up Dalit and navigating a society that forces us to feel shame, need to be told and heard. That's why I am starting Documents of Dalit Discrimination. A safe space for conversation about caste that needs to go beyond 'reservation' and 'merit' and voices that echo the hurt so many of us suffer silently. Let us hear stories of pride, of history and ownership against the emotional, personal, physical and mental toll of the caste system. Let it be known that Rohith's birth was no 'fatal accident'.

Hyderabad scholar suicide: Dalit professors' resignation continues

The professors are members of the University of Hyderabad SC/ST Teachers and Officers Forum, including professors and lecturers, resigned from their administrative positions in a bid to show solidarity with the protesting students over the suicide of a Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula.

The executive council of the University had yesterday revoked the suspension of four Dalit scholars who had been expelled, along with Rohith Vemula, in December last year.

However, the protesting students refused to talk to faculty members.
Earlier on Thursday, at least, 13 faculty members - including Professor V Krishna, controller of exams, Chief Medical Officer Dr Ravendra Kumar, 10 hostel wardens and chief warden Nagaraju - put in their papers from their respective posts.

"We are deeply hurt by Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani's press conference, yesterday (on Wednesday), where we got labelled as Dalits," said Dr Ravindra Kumar, adding that it's like adding salt to our wounds.
"We are about 40 people in Hyderabad University's SC/ST faculty forum, of which 12-13 hold administrative posts," Kumar said.

"We thought that the Government doesn't require our administrative acumen, so decided to lay down admin posts," said Kumar said.
Vemula and four others were suspended in December, and a month later Vemula hanged himself to death on the university campus.

'Rohith Vemula, his ASA friends opposed Yakub Memon's hanging, offered 'namaz' after execution'

Hyderabad: Breaking his silence over Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula's suicide, ABVPleader Susheel Kumar on Wednesday spoke exclusively to Zee Media.
ABVP leader Susheel Kumar has alleged that Rohith Vemula and his friends from ASA (Ambedkar Students Association) had opposed the hanging of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon.

Susheel Kumar has been named in the FIR over the alleged suicide of the dalit student of Hyderabad University.

Moreover, Susheel Kumar has claimed that ASA members including Rohith Vemula had offered 'namaz' after Yakub Memon's execution.

'Har ghar se Yakub niklega'

"They (Rohith and other ASA members) put posters saying 'Ek Yakub ko marenge, to har ek ghar se Yakub niklega' (kill one Yakub, there will be one Yakub born out of every house)," Susheel Kumar claimed.

Rohith Vemula's suicide has triggered massive protests across the nation.

New Delhi: Rohit Vemula, a Dalit PhD scholar, was found hanging at the Central University's hostel room in the campus on Sunday, triggering protests from fellow students.

The deceased was among the five research scholars, who were suspended by the university in August last year and also one of the accused in the case of assault on a student leader.

Here is the last letter by Rohith Vemula:

Good morning,

I would not be around when you read this letter. Don’t get angry on me. I know some of you truly cared for me, loved me and treated me very well. I have no complaints on anyone. It was always with myself I had problems. I feel a growing gap between my soul and my body. And I have become a monster. I always wanted to be a writer. A writer of science, like Carl Sagan. At last, this is the only letter I am getting to write.

I loved Science, Stars, Nature, but then I loved people without knowing that people have long since divorced from nature. Our feelings are second handed. Our love is constructed. Our beliefs colored. Our originality valid through artificial art. It has become truly difficult to love without getting hurt.
The value of a man was reduced to his immediate identity and nearest possibility. To a vote. To a number. To a thing. Never was a man treated as a mind. As a glorious thing made up of star dust. In very field, in studies, in streets, in politics, and in dying and living.

I am writing this kind of letter for the first time. My first time of a final letter. Forgive me if I fail to make sense.

May be I was wrong, all the while, in understanding world. In understanding love, pain, life, death. There was no urgency. But I always was rushing. Desperate to start a life. All the while, some people, for them, life itself is curse. My birth is my fatal accident. I can never recover from my childhood loneliness. The unappreciated child from my past.

I am not hurt at this moment. I am not sad. I am just empty. Unconcerned about myself. That’s pathetic. And that’s why I am doing this.

People may dub me as a coward. And selfish, or stupid once I am gone. I am not bothered about what I am called. I don’t believe in after-death stories, ghosts, or spirits. If there is anything at all I believe, I believe that I can travel to the stars. And know about the other worlds.

If you, who is reading this letter can do anything for me, I have to get 7 months of my fellowship, one lakh and seventy five thousand rupees. Please see to it that my family is paid that. I have to give some 40 thousand to Ramji. He never asked them back. But please pay that to him from that.

Let my funeral be silent and smooth. Behave like I just appeared and gone. Do not shed tears for me. Know that I am happy dead than being alive.

“From shadows to the stars.”

Uma anna, sorry for using your room for this thing.

To ASA family, sorry for disappointing all of you. You loved me very much. I wish all the very best for the future.

For one last time,

Jai Bheem

I forgot to write the formalities. No one is responsible for my this act of killing myself. No one has instigated me, whether by their acts or by their words to this act. This is my decision and I am the only one responsible for this. Do not trouble my friends and enemies on this after I am gone.

FYI OP lately it was found that he was OBC,not Dalit.& rallied against Yabub Menon. He involved in anti national activities, that's why he was rusticated from college. His FB wall was filled up with anti Hindu statements.Even he badmouthed APJ sir.So overall he was a fake & coward. He died for good..
His grand mom admitting he was not Dalit..

Pity... That the country which has given so much to this kid (he got his education) and still doing his Phd and have lost the golden chance of uplifting and enlightening the others, he choose the path of anti-national activities.
Opposing an hanging of terrorist is one thing but offering namaz and trying to give it communal is totally most silly activity.
It is very shameful and pity act on his behalf...Sorry but one cannot fight the systems if you are weak hearted.

.
Very tragic story , hope that he finds peace , caste and social system can be cruel , to some extent the Western society does not faces it to a drastic level as the injustice in India but there are still issues with social differences.

The human rights violations in India are self explanatory

Like what? Standing up for the downtrodden and the lower castes?
So much for the world's 'largest democracy'!

Do you even know what is the incident about? Why the need to be butthurt on every Indian thread?

Have you seen the state of Bangladesh? Many of them have a deeply ingrained inferiority complex...stemming from historical reasons (like that their ancestors were Hindus and Buddhists....but were apparently 100% converted peacefully with no compulsion), 1947 and then 1971 happening in quick succession (confused identity complex regarding religion versus language and culture)....and the fact they are sinking underwater and can only export cheap clothes and shoddy labour and are still way poorer per capita than most of South Asia.

In such a predicament, there are those of them that stay and fight/work to make things better....and there are those that flee to other countries, abandon their faith altogether and try to drag their bigger neighbour down in some way, whenever and wherever possible to try make themselves feel better about their life choices and their perceived state/character of their own homeland.....because after all they get confused looks or snide remarks whenever they dare to introduce as "Bangladeshi" in the places they have settled...and so their butthurt swells quite considerably in real life (especially when they have to eventually resort to passing off as Indian or "country next to India" etc...)

So scoring cheap personal brownie points against their larger, well known, more powerful and more successful neighbour is about all such former paddy farmers are capable of when they go down the road of frustration, flight and embarrassment in real life.

Thankfully as evidenced by even the select representation on this forum, they are not all like that....and even fewer are in real life I imagine (though maybe some are just carefully disguising/hiding it, who knows for sure).

Though I guess its indeed better for them to abandon their faith and stick to forum banter only when they are in this level of desperation...rather than carrying one more extra item with them:

Are you retard or what! Go through my comment again..He was a thug.
The story OP posted, even every terrorist has that..

Ah I see, every Dalit fighting for their rights is a terrorist! I get your point.

In India, the word 'terrorist' is now pretty damn cheap for everyday use.

Did you see the part where his grandmom and family members said they are not dalits?

But then what can we expect from a Paddy-troll who says that white people have good work ethic because of their genes....and there is a concept of "purer" Indians.

Super inferiority complex combined with ignorance.
