How are the names Ngo or Nguyen pronounced??

How are the names Ngo or Nguyen pronounced??
Focus on the 'ng' and 'ngh' combination. Once you have this mastered, the rest will flow naturally.

The 'ng' and 'ngh' combination are problematic for most people as they usually wish to pronounce these names correctly on the first attempt.

The 'ng' and 'ngh' combination are often pronounce like the letter 'n', as in 'new' or 'next', where the pronunciation begins at the front of the palate when the tongue touches the roof of the mouth. So most Viets in trying to help, usually tells the person to pronounce 'Nguyen' as 'nu-yen', two words. This is incorrect. 'Nguyen' is one word in pronunciation.

This is WRONG...

To produce 'n', the tongue touches right behind the front upper teeth to produce 'no'. The pronunciation is simply 'no'. And yes, 'no' is wrong. :D

To properly execute the 'ng' and 'ngh' combination, instead of the front of the palate, the tongue curled up and touches the back. It is more nasal than what the letter 'n' produces. Before you attempt the rest of the names, even as simple as 'Ngo', you need first to master the 'ng'. Work on that to produce the sound. It will be different than 'n'. Then once you got it, the rest will follow easier than you think.

Good luck.
