Tk 3,343 cr projects to improve rural transportation

DHAKA, Oct 02, 2012 (BSS) - The government has taken a Taka 3,343 crore projects for improving rural transportation system in the country's 26 districts aimed at establish market access for rural people through easier communication network.

"The project mainly aims to enhance rural communication and ensure sustainable rural transportation, which would establish a better market access for the rural people," said an official of planning ministry.

It would, he said, also generate employment opportunities for poor, especially the distressed women in rural areas.

"The project would help increase productivity of both agriculture and non-agriculture sector through improvement of rural communication and transportation besides playing a positive role in alleviating poverty," the official said.

The project would also create necessary facilities for a viable rural transportation system and ensure overall maintenance of different roads and waterway communication through dredging and silt removing of the water bodies, he added.

The project would cover the 26 districts including Dhaka, Gazipur, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Manikganj, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Sherpur, Tangail, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur, Sylhet, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Pabna and Sirajganj.

The main activities of the project involve developing 750 km road at upazila level, 503 km road development at union level, maintenance and rehabilitation of 3,635 km roads at both upazila and union levels apart from performance based maintenance contract of 450 km roads.

Under the project, 50 growth centers including women market sections would be constructed along with acquisition of 200 hectares land.


The official said the project titled 'Rural Transport Improvement Project-2 (RTIP-2) is likely to be placed before the meeting of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) scheduled to be held on Thursday at the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) would implement the project with an estimated cost of Taka 3,343 crore by June 2017.

Of the total amount, Taka 2,417 crore will come as project assistance from the World Bank while the rest of Taka 926 crore from the national exchequer.

Another official at the Planning Commission said that the
'Rural Development Project: Infrastructure Development 26
(greater Dhaka, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogra, Comilla, Sylhet,
Chittagong and Noakhali) was completed in June at a cost of Taka
2,602 crore.

Following completion of the above-mentioned project, the
Rural Transport Improvement Project-2 (RTIP-2) is awaiting ECNEC
nod, said the official.

In the proposed project, six new districts - Mymensingh,
Jamalpur, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Sherpur and Tangail - have made
their inclusion replacing Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore,
Chapainawabganj, Bogra and Joypurhat.
