Dhaka, Oct 15 (UNB) The existing gas reserve of the countrys largest Titas gas field has increased by 700-800 billion cubic feet (bcf) after a three dimension (3D) survey was conducted by the Petrobangla.
The 3D survey found the Titas fields gas reserve has enhanced by 700-800 bcf to 8.05 trillion cubic feet (tcf) from 7.3 tcf, said Petrobangla chairman Dr. Hussain Monsur while briefing reporters at the Petrobangla office today (Monday).
Petrobanglas subsidiary, Bangladesh Production and Exploration Company (BAPEX) has conducted the 3D survey with the help of France-based consultant CGG Veritas with an Asian Development Bank financing of Tk 168 crore.
Earlier, in 2003, a 2D survey was conducted in Titas gas field which determined its reserve at 7.3 tcf (or 7325 bcf). After 11 years, the 3D survey was conducted this year and the reserve was set at 8.05 tcf (8051 bcf).
The Petrobangla chairman said that after the new reserve, now Titas fields recoverable reserve stands at 6.635 tcf gas considering a 70 percent recovery factor.
He mentioned that until August this year, 3.440 tcf was produced from Titas gas field through 16 wells and now 2.195 tcf gas remained extractable.
According to Petrobangla chairman, the countrys total recoverable gas reserve is 12-15 tcf against a necessary reserve of 22 tcf as per the governments `Vision 2021.
BAPEX managing director Mortuza Ahmed Faruque said that the 3D survey has also found a possible reserve of 1.569 tcf at a new structure to a depth of 7700 metre, which is not recoverable at this stage of time.
Because that structure is located below a high pressure zone, gas production from that level is very risky, he said.
Dr. Hussain Monsur said that Petrobangla has taken initiative to drill a total of 11 new wells at the Titas gas field to enhance its production.
Of the 11 wells, BAPEX will drill three wells and Russian Gazprom will dig four wells while another four wells will be drilled by the foreign companies with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Faruque said that after completion of the 11 wells at the Titas gas field, daily gas production from the field will go up by about 300 million cubic feet (mmcf).
At present, Titas field is producing about 400 mmcf gas per day through its existing 16 wells.
BAPEX chief also said that the Titas gas field has 10 layers in the existing position.
After 3D survey, another eight layers were discovered of which two layers are in the low pressure zone in the moderate depth while six layers are located in the extreme depth from 3100 metre to 7700 metre depth in high pressure zone.
Replying to a question, Faruque said there are 150,000 illegal gas consumers in the country for which the Petrobangla is losing revenue of Tk 1.8 million per day.
He said withdrawal of suspension on new gas connection depends on the governments decision.
If the government decides to start providing new gas connection, eight million cubic feet of gas will be required to feed the new consumers, added the BAPEX chief.
