Mumbai: Three state-run companies—Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd and Hindustan Shipyard Ltd—have come together to form a consortium for building submarines indigenously. The consortium will jointly stake claim with the ministry of defence for being considered as a prospective bidder for the proposed P-75 (I) project of the Indian Navy for building six submarines at a local shipyard. In a statement, Bhel said a memorandum of understanding was signed among the three firms on 26 December. The Indian government has decided to build six submarines locally at a cost of about 50,000 crore. Bhel has five decades of experience in design, development and manufacture of a variety of equipment for crucial infrastructure sectors, while Hindustan Shipyard is engaged in shipbuilding, repairs and submarine retrofitting. Mishra Dhatu is another defence PSU engaged in development and manufacture of alloys and special-purpose steel for applications in defence, aerospace and atomic energy. At 11.50am, Bhel was trading at 257.50 per share, up 1.18%. The benchmark Sensex was trading at 27,373, down 0.08%.
@sancho @Abingdonboy @Koovie ,what do you guys think, good decision or another developing blunder by inefficient PSU to develop a completely new design.

Nope give it to L&T or pipavav. HSL needs to make ships in time before this important project is given to them.
L&T can do it faster and better.

Interesting, can you add the link please! Seems like the PSUs are trying to counter the agenda of the new government to leave them out of important projects. But if they will have a chance here is doubtful, since the government is trying to push the privat industry only at the moment. They should had included at least a single privat player, to cover that end and to show that they are for a joint Indian project. But it shows that competition is increased now and the PSUs taking on the new challange and I am eagerly waiting to a similar move of HAL (@sandy_3126) to retain importance in the aviation side. They need a team up either with an Indian or foreign player now than ever before, otherwise the government will keep ignoring them and they won't be able to set them apart from ADA / DRDO either.

BHEL if i remember correct has enough orders running .. MIDHANI based from hyderabad is really awesome in producing alloys and wont be surprised of its participation in ATV projects already. For long it has been supplying crucial equipment to ISRO for its launch vehicles. The choice of HSL is a bit surprising as well as dampening in spirits.. this shud have been a pvt player to be really attractive proposition.. i understand the PSU coming together but if MOD has to look with a long term perspective then the 2nd sub line should be in private sector.. thereby increasing the chances of our entire defence industry to bloom over time

Well this kind of competition is what they needed for decades... lets hope for the best

Actually it's the otherway around! The privat companies will mainly aim on the short term licence production deal, but that doesn't mean that they will further invest on the gathered know how to proper R&D and the later development of an own indigenous SSK. We basically will have 2 production lines that know how to produce modern subs, but possibly only 1 that has interest to take that to the next step. Again a reason why we have to see Indian state owned and Indian privat industry as a joint asset for the country, not only competition for eachother. We need both for the long term good of the country, that's why the best route would had been, to take a follow order of foreign subs (most likely Scorpenes) on the MDL line and let MDL based on the gathered know how team up with a privat player to jointly develop and produce an indigenous SSK, that can be build in larger numbers either on a 2nd production line, or even at both.
Worst case scenario now is, MDL builds 6 x Scorpenes, a privat ship yard 6 x Amur class and IN selecting to increase the orders of one or even both of these subs, which basically kills any indigenous SSK developments, since we already have 2 modern SSKs under production in India.

Well this kind of competition is what they needed for decades... lets hope for the best

Of course, that's why I want HAL to compete TATA in the Avro replacement, or for licence production deals in general, but the actual benefit for India comes, if HAL and TATA works together for the development of an aircraft and that should be the real aim for us, not limiting ourself to privat or state owned.

Good Idea... All they need is a foreign shipyard to collaborate with.

Just curious, will the research include inter planetary cosmic planes? Or is it just limited to submarines?

I am very much interested in learning the technical details of those cosmic planes.

These two (BHEL & MIDHANI) should partner up with L&T or Pipav

Yes.We should encourage this trend.
We need competition like this.Govt should add stringent timelines to this.

Thank God a Gujurati is a PM! Half breeds are a threat to India. No loyalty to the motherland.....
