I wasn't in Australia when he defected (I was still in Afghanistan fighting for another country) So I am not aware of any of his story.

But his story is similarly aligned to the recent Chinese student defector Tony Chang. I would not judge both their case as I am not privy to any information as to what they say, but In the intelligence field, they have to have some degree of truth to have both stories being similar with such a time gap which is 13 years.

In term of Intelligence work, this is a classic Counter-Intelligence operation. The first thing a country par-take in Counter intelligence is to try to control the dissident voice overseas, and use it as a indication to project the Chinese image to its own people. the way to do it is by unionisation (basically control any sort of union, trade, student and so on) and also money.

If you can control what kind of intelligence/information flow into China from overseas, then you can create your own image you want to project to the local populace

But if you ask me whether or not what they said is entirely true? That is a double edge sword of word, they can still be lying, I mean, if they betray their own country and tell you this, what make you think they won't betray you just to get to his way in a second? That is always the conundrum of a spy.

Yeah, right. It is quite possible that they don't show you China Uncensored in the cave where you live. And, as you astutely noted, it's an Indian job. Anything that doesn't suit you and makes you feel 2mm tall (most of the time, in other words) is an Indian plot!

I remember his case. He was one of the student protester. He must have reformed and then work his way to be a diplomat stationed in Australia. He enjoyed staying in Australia that when him term expired, he defected so that he can remain in Australia.

He had to make up an anti China story to justify his action.

Why after all the years in Australia, he waited until his term ends before he defects.
And China was so good to him allowing a former student protester to become a diplomat.

The entire SE Asia took in China refuge many for almost 100 years and no one make noise.

And India can deport all Tibetans including Dalai back -- no one ask india to keep them.
