This article is about the very first "friendly fire" causality in the region of Subcontinent. The achievement is held by none other than the Indian Air Force during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

During 1971 war, Pakistan Air Force operated Dassault Mirage IIIR for photo reconnaissance missions. Mirages conducted regular photo recce missions in Ferozepur area to update the ground commanders about Indian reinforcement efforts aimed at vacating the incursion.

An important mission involved recce of crossing points over Gang Canal for a careful scrutiny of obstacles across the waterway that could possibly impede the movement of II Corps of Indian Army.

Two pilots who played a sterling role in the photo recce operations were Sqn Ldr Farooq Umar and Flt Lt Najib Akhtar. Of the 30 photo recce sorties (besides 15 escorts) flown by No 5 Squadron "Falcons" before and during the war, 22 were considered successful.

In Shakargarh Sector, a few night recce missions were attempted with partial success.
In one such mission on the night of 11 December, an IAF MiG-21 "Fishbed" scrambled to intercept a Mirage flown by Sqn Ldr Farooq Umar.
While the Mirage departed at high speed, the MiG-21 carried out ''Atol'' missile attack and shooting down another MiG-21 flown by Flt Lt A B Dhavle, which was patrolling in the vicinity.

Four-odd Bomb Damage Assessment missions were also flown following the initial strikes on runways.

Not the first. A PAF F-6 was shot down by his wingman on 8th December

Hashmi immediately started looking for the other Su-7 and, to be sure of his No 2’s safety, called out for his position. Afzal replied but the transmission was garbled, which Hashmi interpreted as his No 2 being visual with him and, assumed that he was somewhere in the rear quarters. Just then Hashmi picked contact with the second aircraft and did not think twice before launching a missile. If there was any difference between the similar-looking planforms of the Su-7 and F-6, this was surely one time to have had a closer look. His No 2 was nowhere in sight and his frantic unanswered calls to Afzal seemed to confirm Hashmi’s worst fear. Had he mixed up his quarry in the murky winter haze? Afzal, who was chasing the second Su-7 at high speed and had ended up ahead of his leader, was not able to clearly convey his position on a broken radio. Hashmi, an otherwise unflappable squadron commander, should have known better, for he had been too eager for the second kill which unfortunately ended up as a horrific fatality for his wingman.

yup, sad indeed that we won't even speak the truth and acknowledge it was a fratricide by his own Flight Lead and categorized it being shot down by the own AAA as "easily digestible/acceptable" vs calling out the Lead thus compromising the impeccable AA service record.

You should probably look in your own backyard before you try picking out the trash in someone else's.
This might not be the first but it is definitely the most costly and embarrassing blue-on-blue air incident in Asia.

These accidents are bound to happen and are part and parcel of flying combat missions or even during combat training.
We also had a Mirage leader shoot down his wingman while returning from a training mission (dropping bombs). On the way back to base, they decided, without previously going over it on the ground some ACM/Air Interceptions for training during which the lead did not realize his master switch was still on, shot down the other aircraft with a AAM.
I am also certain there were blue on blue incidents in 1965 and perhaps even in the preceding years that are just not in the public domain.

And you shouldn't try to prove more loyal than man's best friend.
Does the title suggest a list or breakdown of all blue on blue .
Since you obviously have comprehension issues ....let me post the title again as it appeared in the source.

You allegedly joined the forum just weeks earlier yet are digging up years old articles.
Any previous ID that we are missing.

Once you're caught spewing BS by 2 Pakistanis and 1 Indian.

Yet all you can do is question is someone's forum joining date ?

Stick to the topic and make corrections.

Or does some one need to to explain that Dec 8th ( PAF self goal ) is a 3 days BEFORE Dec 11th ( IAF self goal)?

Pl. don't bother typing a reply to me, esp. in your unique grammar / vocabulary.

The IAF self goal was in 1971, 16 years before the PAF one... Did you people not learn how to read dates in elementary school?

So 2 Pakistanis and one faker make a point.....where does that leave you.
First prove your own worth before being a champion for others.....may i remind you there is a reason you had to adopt another ID and your worthless posts are often deleted.....we have all heard of blind leading blind but a faker voicing for a stray is a new one.
Any ways, since this old thread has been bumped up, i will make proper corrections to it.
The source in OP did get it wrong since the first Blue on Blue in the subcontinent happened during the 1965 war and not in 1971. And once again the honour goes to the Indian ground defences.
