Check out the USA's new found fondness for Sri Lanka. From screaming and shouting at Sri Lanka, threatening and finger pointing, they have done a complete U-turn since the presidential elections - because they know their point man and sock puppet Ranil Wickremasinghe (Sri Lanka's PM) is now running the country.

Thank you, Ambassador Kariyawasam. It is a privilege and a joy to celebrate Sri Lanka’s National Day with all of you.

This year the whole world is celebrating with Sri Lanka. Following January’s elections, you have every reason to hold your heads high and take pride in what you have already accomplished in this young year.

We all know democracy is a work in progress. You have to look no further than America’s own journey to see that fact. We marched for civil rights and risked life and limb so all peoples could finally enjoy the right to vote. We still struggle with questions of race and economic opportunity. And we continue to work towards a more inclusive democracy to this very day.

Indeed, every step along the way we’ve had to renew our devotion to the principles of democracy, freedom, and liberty. And throughout our history, we’ve returned to the ballot box to do so – to choose our leaders; to debate the most vexing national issues with civility; and to participate in the peaceful transfer of power.

After the most successful election in your country’s history, Sri Lankans can stand proud alongside Americans as keepers of the democratic dream. The people of Sri Lanka – from Jaffna to Galle – sent a clear signal from the ballot box: that they wanted your country to take a step forward, to realize its tremendous potential, and to finally enjoy the fruits of peace.

And, sure enough, the new government has wasted no time in translating that promise into action.

Less than four weeks into taking office, President Sirisena is pursuing an ambitious agenda. The world took notice when he lifted restrictions on the media; restored independence to government institutions; and committed to respect human rights not just for some Sri Lankans, but for all Sri Lankans.

It was particularly moving to see members of the Tamil National Alliance join the celebrations in Colombo yesterday. President Sirisena’s remembrance of all the Sri Lankans who perished in the war and his pledge to never again allow Sri Lanka “to be traumatized by the shedding of innocent blood” was an important step towards healing your country’s wounds.

But my hope is that you will not stop there. In mending the rifts inside Sri Lanka, I hope you will turn outside, to the world, in order to share your story of progress and reconciliation.

Indeed, Sri Lanka has always been an outward looking nation – ever since sending ambassadors to Augustus Caesar’s Rome and crossing the Bay of Bengal en route to China thousands of years ago. More recently, your soldiers have worn the azure blue helmets of the United Nations and served with distinction in the Central African Republic and elsewhere. Our security forces have worked together before—including to fight transnational threats like piracy—and hope to do so again.

I believe it is time for your country to return to its rightful place as a respected member of the international community – and I think your people demand it. That was the message Assistant Secretary Nisha Biswal relayed during her visit to Colombo earlier this week. She assured President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe that we will be partners in their effort to build a peaceful, prosperous, democratic, and inclusive future.

We will support Sri Lanka’s efforts to expand democratic freedom and political rights; to prevent corruption and investigate financial crimes; and to promote sustainable economic growth. Sri Lanka’s trade with the United States generates tens of thousands of jobs for Sri Lankans—and we are eager to see that relationship grow with new trade and investment for the benefit of both of our economies. That commitment will also form the basis of our conversations with the Foreign Minister and Finance Minister, whom Secretary Kerry looks forward to hosting in Washington next week.

Sixty-seven years ago – when your country earned its independence – your first Prime Minister unfurled and raised the red and gold Lion Flag outside the Assembly Hall for the first time in over a century.

On that occasion, the first Leader of the Sri Lankan House of Representatives spoke to the crowd. He said: “We cannot allow our newly regained freedom to run the risk of remaining … a theoretical concept … We must see that it quickens into a life of greater happiness and prosperity for us all.”

Today, we can all feel the promise of that day quickening into life in a new way. We can all see a future for Sri Lanka brimming with happiness and prosperity. And we can all celebrate hand-in-hand, knowing that the next generation of Sri Lankans will know peace and pride like never before.

Congratulations on your anniversary. Thank you very much.

You are shitting on Sri Lanka's name left and right on this forum. Whose puppet are you? Still can't forget the taste of MR's weeny, eh boy?

Are you really this jobless to edit pictures that no one cares about and post them on a forum?

Only people shitting on Sri Lanka's name are people like Ranil, Mangala, Chandrika who effed up Sri Lanka. Now it's pretty clear they have collaborated with outside powers to take the reigns of the country.

What's wrong with having ties with US by the way?

Nothing wrong with having ties with the USA There is something wrong in being their bitch. Even a dumbo like you should be able to see just what a U-turn the USA has made. Do you not remember how they were the last time Ranil was in power? Ranil is a worm who could never win elections on his own. So much for "democracy." The USA has got what it wanted in Sri Lanka - like in Ukraine, except without the bloodshed. And morons like you think it is people like me who are "shitting on Sri Lanka's name". Effin laughable.

Nothing, nothing at all. Some might point at you and laugh, call you a slave or a puppet, but its all about perception and theirs is wrong.

Actually there are benefits to being friendly with the US. Increased investment from US businesses, scientific and technology cooperation, diplomatic and military support, intelligence sharing, cultural ties and swaps, not being a target of US adventurism or wrath, plenty of benefits of being a US friend too. We may even defend you if you are threatened.

Being a friend doesn't mean you are a slave. The Us asks for, but never demands cooperation. Just look at the divergence on Ukraine. The US wants to arm the Ukrainian military, our allies and friends in Europe don't. If you would just look (not you Azizam, but people in general) they would see that our friends aren't slaves, but actually friends.

Being our enemy gets you sanctioned, diplomatically isolated or even attacked.

@Gabriel92 can tell you all about how the US and France are different in their approaches. France is our friend, our ally even, but they are far from being our slave.

lol, puppets galore

maybe this new president along with U.S support will be good for Sri Lanka :D who knows.

someone a bitch to another or a puppet. how much the puppeteer pulls the strings is what I worry about.

Are we surprised? This is part of the American policy of confining and encircling China. SriLanka should make good use of this opportunity but must avoid from taking sides.

Learn from Pakistan how she got herself destroyed by aligning with US and becoming her puppet. Destruction of Pakistan must be taught as a course to the foreign service people in free countries.

I apologise over our idiotic compatriot. His favourite political party lost the election and now he's determined to bring as much bad reputation as he can to the country on this forum so that he can prove his point.

Sri Lankans have no enmity towards US at all and we understand the value of cooperating with the US/west.

On this thread we discuss the internal issues that include improving ties with US yet this member refuses to participate in discussions as he knows that he has nothing valuable to contribute and keeps making useless threads.

LOL. Take a look at this Sri Lankan weasel Azizam trying to suck up to American members on the forum. Fact is prior to the elections the USA was trying to attack Sri Lanka and now they've done a complete U-turn, so much so they are singing praises from the tree tops and even trying to postpone their UN human rights resolution! Only an idiot wouldn't connect the dots. Shining American boots might earn you a prety penny like Ranil Wickremasinghe Azizam, keep at it.

Speak for yourself. Plenty of Sri Lankans are annoyed at the USA for denigrating our security forces, providing refuge for LTTE spokesmen like Rudrakumaran and sponsoring numerous human rights resolutions at the UN that have targeted Sri Lanka. They are also aware of what an utter hypocrite the US government has been. Not only Sri Lankans mind you, but millions upon millions of people around the world are aware of the hypocrisy of the USA.

More delusions of a Sri Lankan weasel Azizam. Please stop embarassing yourself.

Why apology? BTW, keep in mind the following quote from Kissinger, the US foreign minister, while doing tango with US:

“To be an enemy of America can be dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal”. Henry Kissinger

Servility. Azizam is one of those Sri Lankans who enjoys being servile. Sri Lanka was colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch and British (much longer than any other South Asian country) and many Sri Lankans are quite obsequious to the west (and people with white skin). They will scream abuse at their own people, but sing the praises of everything the west does. Sri Lanka's current prime minister Ranil Wickremasinghe is one of those people.

The US government knows that in Sri Lanka it has a leader who will bend down and kiss its boots and shine them for a pretty petty or two, or even a few words of praise.

The current SL goverment's point man Ranil Wickremasinghe allowed Sri Lanka's airports to be used for rendition flights. What else needs to be said.

Apology because samv is making a fool out of himself on this forum and giving an impression that Sri Lanka is a typical conspiracy theory zoo.

There are two major camps in Sri Lanka when it comes to foreign policy, capitalist and socialist. Capitalists would prefer US/West and socialists prefer China/East and yet you don't see this level of immaturity by anyone when discussing politics. The majority of ordinary Sri Lankans would prefer healthy relations with both.

Even MR's brothers are US citizens and when he lost the election his brothers went back to US. MR in his second term was not successful at maintaining foreign policy. He was indulging in nepotism and corruption.

There are few Sri Lankan members who are belonged to the socialist camp on this forum and they discuss matters logically. As I said, if he has issues over new Sri Lankan government he can simply post in the thread that is dedicated for it but he has nothing good to contribute. You can take a look at that thread if you like or you can ask fellow Sri Lankan members - @Saradiel @Gibbs @HeinzG
