And as a resident of the US, I say you are wrong.The biggest challenge for US is to build a solid culture to make all races and all cultures coexist peacefully and fairly, I don't see any prominent success in this aspect.
You are taking the current rise in racial tension in the US as normative when in reality, you should have taken the election of Barack Obama as sign that the American society, as a whole, has breached the threshold where race will begin to diminish as a major component of how Americans view themselves. Blacks are in the minority so it was whites who put Obama into office. This is not to say that the American society is perfect, so spare US that standard. You need to look at other components such as the increasing diminishing of racist Confederate signs in southern States.
