The rise and fall of PIA; Has Imran Khan taken the right step?

Govt ownership of PIA is history it just cannot function anymore , has to be sold if anyone is willing to invest or buy majority stake

They tried to sell it .. there were no serious takers

Seriously who wants an airline with sub par performing employees, below averagely maintained planes and a mountain of debt ...

Plus, non union allowed to dissolve. Who the hell will invest money in such a financial political monster. No doubt a corporation full of junk employees. I think I gave you guys an example, few years ago, I attend a birthday party of friends son, who work in PIA....they SOB was using PIA van during off hours, on top all paper products in party were from PIA with PIA logo...I doubt that even cake was also from PIA Flight Kitchen...lolz ... PIA is badly abused, beyond public imagination.

PIA is badly abused. Govt should dissolved and start new airline. All pilots should be taken from PAF academy and have tough exams. No unions any type , pilots or labor unions. Otherwise PIA will be remain hijacked by corrupt politicians and unions.
Nothing stops you from having the same issues again, you can fix what you got and fire bad staff and cut the fat. I known unions are an issue but if the airline is already crippled, a strike won't help the union because not operating for a short time will probably be easier for the government.

Should they allow all fake pilots to continue...every body will say NO.
I think its a good initiative...from now fake degree holders will think twice.
All those culprits should be punished who hired them at first place.
Things will be normal after few months.

Sell 49 percent share to private parties and abolish unions. a test scenario. Fire all union members.

If news of pilots being "unqualified" is true then many lives have been lost due to this crime. Many crashes have happened involving pia.

Many more lives have been put at risk too. I been on a PIA flight and many pdf members have also.

lol...

i hear you.

This is so PIA ...that is why i say the Finance Ministry should just pull the plug..stop paying their salaries let see how long they can bark.

it is not just about lives.. it is about principles and compliance. Even if has zero crashes it still doesnt change any thing.

PIA has a culture of doing what ever they want making it a nasty rogue organization and long with CAA it's partners in crime.

They needed the time to make reforms and now they have it, if they're loyal they'll come back stronger and if they're not or if there are people who will not allow them making reforms then sorry to say a single Imran Khan can not change this country because he just can not stop each and every single person down the order from doing injustice and corruption. "Jiska jaha bas chalta hai wo udhar maalik ban jata hai"

The step of exposing fake license holders is in the right direction. Being a frequent traveler, I now atleast know that I will be sitting behind a qualified pilot.

Another step in the right direction would be to expose fake aeronautical engineers in pia. Then comes the turn of credential validation of all the employees in pia and all other organizations of Pakistan.

Government must publish the names of all such people. In other countries people have to return substantial part of their earnings when it is found they were working on fake credentials. If they can't, their assets are seized.

A country where parliamentarians were found to submit fake degrees to the election commission and then getting away with it without consequences with the help of courts, we should have the least expectations of betterment though. There is a high possibility that our judges are also found to have fake degrees.

Such is the situation of our country. Sad but true. Accepting the truth and then disclosing it is the least expected from an honest government. But I am not satisfied still, unless the names of those aren't published to publicly shame them, along with the names of all such crooks and those who were found receiving money through BISP program.

But I know, when we have parliamentarians who were found to be fraudsters, I am expecting too much. Imran khan can't do anything alone.

Ahmad Saeed was the last MD to steer PIA into profits. “We asked General Pervez Musharraf to support us and let us do what we wanted to do. Our loans were restructured and from a loss of Rs2.2 billion in 2001, the airline made a profit of Rs1.8 billion in the following year,” Saeed said.

But was that turnaround possible without government support? Probably not! Saeed’s management convinced Islamabad to arrange a bailout package of Rs20 billion, which meant payment off long-pending loans, plugging interest drain and cash equity injection of Rs8.82 billion.

PIA used the equity injection to lease three Boeing 777-200 and six Airbus 310 aircraft in 2004. It was after 13 years that the airline inducted planes to its aging fleet. New planes allowed the airline to start flights to Chicago, Toronto and London.

But that was also the year when airlines around the world started to feel the impact of rising fuel prices. For Pakistani carriers there was an additional problem of rupee depreciation which was slowly creeping up but had yet to cause major damage.

In subsequent years, CEOs will partially blame debt repayment burden, piled up due to acquisition of B-777s, in spoiling the financial statements. Altogether, PIA acquired nine B-777s at a cost around $1.5 billion.

“Unfortunately, all the loans were locked in dollars and the rupee depreciation was not foreseen (to hurt) at that time,” said Ahmad Saeed. “We were not allowed to forward-book dollars at that time.”

There was another change that took place. “Real fault for this mess lies with the open skies policy. We also faced the problem when Emirates was being allowed just two additional flights. But we asked the government to shoot down the proposal.”

"If the statement of Mr. Ghulam Sarwar announcing about 40% of pilots having dubious licenses besmirched the airline’s reputation, then doesn’t the step of grounding them all restore the confidence of the world in PIA? Does this not mean that Pakistan will not put anyone’s life in danger? "

Agree with the above. Exposing the dirt was necessary
Well done IK for calling a spade a spade. One can only cure a cancer once he is ready to accept that he has a cancer. People like MushahidAllah PMLN and Khurshid Shah PPP should be given a rod for bringing PIA to this state

The opposers of not publicly accepting the truth mostly include those who are fine with accepting a leader who submitted fake letter (in calibri font) to the court and is still sitting in her house in a hope that she would one day become the PM of Pakistan. She is liked by many.. You will see her followers on this very forum as well.

All government run institutions have one basic problem. Pensions. This bitch is a big drag on cash flows. This is why they should be privatized and pensions finished.

LAHORE: Cash-strapped Pakistan Railways has managed to secure a relief package of Rs6 billion from the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), which is expected to provide some breathing space to the company in the current crisis.

The amount, approved on Monday, would be given to the Ministry of Railways in three equal installments of Rs2 billion per month.

“Funds will be spent largely on paying salaries to staff and pensions to retired employees,” stated a spokesperson for Pakistan Railways.

We need to have a qoum that has ghairat. And is willing to change itself. Every uncle and aunty in Pakistan is walking, talking R-Wing in themselves.

In their minds*planets* they are the messiah and rest of the people are dajjal.

Since Bhutto this downfall has started.
Considering the case of PIA in isolation will be a great mistake.
The condition of PIA is an extension of overall downfall in our society.
We need a leader, who have eyes that can see through. Who really can do social engineering.
Factors that are contributing in over all decline of society, will take PIA down, no matter how good you plan for PIA.
From education system, to clerical staff. From food authorities to consulates, everything in Pakistan needs a social surgery.
