It has always surprised me that India and Australia aren't closer friends and allies, both countries have the rule of law, both are multicultural and Democratic, both nations have professional military's and so many other common interest.

Found this good article about the way forward and I think Melbourne University released a white paper regarding this as well, which was then released by the India High Commission in Australia.

"As flanking States in the eastern Indian Ocean, India and Australia are critical to this emerging arena of geopolitics. Fellow democracies with shared values, concerns and interests, they should have strong synergies."

Australian and
American strategic thinkers have sought to interest India in the Indo-Pacific,
the confluence of the eastern Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific, and are
advocating seeing the two water bodies as one continuum. The idea appeals to
India but the timing does not. While India sees its Indo-Pacific role as probable
at some point in the 21
st
century, it does not want to be dragged into any such
arrangement before it can develop the economic might, the naval fleet and the
power-projection capacities to deliver on its promises. It is also wary of putting
all its eggs in the American basket. Finally, there is for the moment no political
ownership, overarching doctrine or grand strategy in New Delhi for a deep
Indian Ocean thrust. India still awaits a political/foreign policy leadership that
will expand the contours of the Look East policy and explicitly define India’s
strategic frontiers and interests in the Indian Ocean (or Indo-Pacific). The
political system is not ready for that yet.

If India and Japan share concerns related to the Straits of Malacca, India and
Vietnam are potential partners in the South China Sea. However, India is
ambiguous as to how far it will go should this needle China, and the Vietnamese
recognise that the Americans are a more efficacious and dependable naval ally
for now

At the level of the Indian defence forces, there is still residual distrust of
Australia’s military. Pokhran 1998 keeps being brought up, of course, but so
too is surveillance by Australia’s P-3C Orion maritime aircraft of Indian naval
ships in the Andaman seas, a practice which ended in the 1990s. The US Navy
discontinued such Cold War era surveillance years earlier, so, as with the
Pokhran nuclear tests, Australian policy lagged behind that of its ally and it bore
the brunt of Indian displeasure alone. Such discontent tends to linger on among
Indian officials, partly because ties with Canberra are less critical to New Delhi
than those with Washington, DC.

Australia isn't multicultural. Multiculturalism is being forced upon the Australians. I read that Australians don't like indians, its only the gov.t that's kissing up to india in order to counterbalance China's growing influence.

Guys enjoy the videos, song was hilarious.....Indo-Aus partnership took dramatic turn when they agreed to sell Uranium to India. After US, Indian Navy is the only potent navy against Chinese one. There is no doubt China has edge over everyone but Pacific is backyard of US.

24.6% of Australians are born overseas
43.1% of Australians have atleast 1 parent who was born overseas.
1 million Australians have Indian ancestry.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard was born overseas
Opposition Leader Tony Abbot was born overseas
