The reported RAW operation in Dhaka
Is it believable that the Home Ministry, armed with several intelligence agency outfits, did not know whether the Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) sleuths had whisked away an ISI agent from Dhaka? The State Minister of the Home Ministry expressed his ignorance about it and said he only learnt it from newspapers! If this is the state of affairs with our intelligence agencies or the authorities, we are afraid, foreign outfits will be in Bangladesh to do guerilla-like kidnapping in the future.
The reported abduction of the Pakistani intelligence agent by the RAW, as reported by the Time of India, cannot be untrue. What is really surprising is that Bangladesh has not yet made a move to check with the Indian authorities on veracity of such an incident that took place in Dhaka, the capital of an independent country.
The opposition BNP has quite rightly asked the government to explain the RAW action. How can members of a foreign intelligence agency come to another country and whisk off an agent of a rival agency, the BNP spokesperson wondered expressing dismay in Dhaka on Wednesday. The 'Times of India' in a report claimed Zia-ur Rehman alias Waqas had been hiding in Bangladesh and was preparing to leave for Pakistan via Nepal when he was apprehended by the RAW. Indian security sources quoted by the newspaper said they were clueless about Waqas' exact whereabouts. Waqas was reportedly an ISI agent who oversaw the Indian Mujahideen operations in India. The security and safety of citizens of Bangladesh are now seemingly in jeopardy because of the reported guerilla-like action of the RAW in the country. We know how the RAW had meddled in Bangladesh by promoting tribal insurgency in the Chittagong Hill Tracts by giving training and arms to the Chakma tribes guerillas to carry on bush warfare in three hill districts of the country for two decades. We are still aware how the Indian RAW had encouraged and armed the LTTE in Sri Lanka to destabilize the island country for decades. What really concerns us is the security of our vital installations in Bangladesh. We urge the government to get an explanation from India as to how the TOI could get the info and how true the report is. We want to find the report as false but the fact remains the newspaper based its story on Indian security sources. Surprisingly, while Bangladesh continuously denies such reports, Indian press still report handing over of Indian secessionist guerillas by Bangladesh to India. Dhaka keeps mum over such reports. And silence gives credence to veracity of such incidents. Entire nation now wants to know what really occurred when the RAW abducted the ISI agent right in Dhaka. And it is a million-dollar question how the RAW or the ISI could operate efficiently in Bangladesh under the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
