Though this railway is a slow one, the design of major railway hubs has used the standard model adopted in China's high-speed railway sector. It looks more modern than many international airports, with many elements of an eco-friendly design.
New Nairobi Railway Station: modernity with Chinese characteristics
In August 2009, Kenya Railways (KR) decided that China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) would construct the Mombasa - Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway financed by the Export-Import Bank of China. The design speed for passenger trains is 120km/h while for freight trains 80km/h. Standards for Chinese Grade I Railway would apply in the construction and design of the railway. As the first one of Kenya in the last 100 years, it would reduce the travel time between Mombasa and Nairobi from 10 hours or so to about 4 hours. Moreover, the railway also serves as the first section of the Northern Corridor in East Africa, through which the imports and exports of such countries as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo-Brazzaville and South Sudan would be transported.
