Jakarta, CNN Indonesia -
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized that Indonesia does not intend to open relations with Israel .
He reiterated this in the Indonesian Foreign Minister's Annual Press Address which this time was held virtually on Wednesday (6/1). This virtual speech was witnessed by all Indonesian representatives abroad, representatives of foreign countries in Jakarta, and other high-ranking officials.
"At the end of 2020 a lot of news circulated widely as if Indonesia wanted to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. I want to emphasize, until now, Indonesia has no intention of opening diplomatic relations with Israel," said Retno.
Retno explained that Indonesia will continue to support Palestinian independence based on a two-state solution and other parameters that are agreed upon internationally.
Retno said in a telephone communication with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on December 16, President Joko Widodo emphasized the same thing.
Recently, the discourse on establishing Israel-Indonesia relations has resurfaced after Tel Aviv reached an agreement to normalize relations with four countries in the last three months.
In today's annual speech, Retno also raised Indonesia's efforts to help peace negotiations in Afghanistan, one of which was by attending the agreement between the United States and the Taliban group in Doha in February 2020.
Indonesia, said Retno, also attended the Afghanistan Peace Process on September 12, 2020.
"I also met with President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul on March 1, 2020 and inaugurated the Indonesia-Afghanistan Women's Solidarity Network," said Retno.
