The United States is ready to open the door for talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, said US Ambassador to Islamabad Richard Olson in a policy speech delivered at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad on Wednesday.

The Afghan Taliban could be part of Afghanistan’s future if they met conditions to ensure long-term peace and stability in the war-torn country, he went on to say.
The remarks by Ambassador Olson reiterated recent American emphasis on pursuing reconciliation in Afghanistan instead of its usual method of using military might.
In this context, Olson said their new office in Qatar could be used for negotiations between the Afghan High Peace Council and representatives of the Taliban.
“The end result of any process must be that the Taliban end violence, break ties with al Qaeda and accept Afghanistan’s Constitution. If this happens, we believe the Taliban can be a part of Afghanistan’s future,” he remarked.
Ambassador Olson also called for the US and Pakistan to work together to facilitate a negotiated peace in Afghanistan, noting, “For the sake of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the region, Pakistan’s full support to an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process is needed now.”
Olson acknowledged mistakes were committed by the US in 1989 when it abandoned the region and he insisted that his country would not repeat them when foreign forces pull out of Afghanistan at the end of 2014.
“The United States is committed to a cooperative and long-term partnership with Pakistan, broader than any one issue and centered on areas of mutual interests. The US relationship with Pakistan is not shaped solely by our commitments and responsibilities in Afghanistan,” he continued.
“[The year] 2014 is not 1989,” he asserted, “The United States recognizes the mistakes of the past, and will not disengage from the region.”
In a question-and-answer session, Ambassador Olson refrained from making comments on US drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal belt. He also avoided speaking on Pakistan’s nuclear programme. “I think such issues must not be discussed through public diplomacy,” he replied, when asked to comment on apprehensions that the US wanted to de-nuclearise Pakistan.
Ambassador Olson also used the occasion to point out US assistance to Pakistan in the fields of energy, economic development, education and health as a tangible sign of his country’s long-term investment in Pakistan’s future.

Whether US wants that or not and whether their terms are met or not ,Taliban are going to be the main players after 2014 in afghanistan and as per recent increase in their offensive against US it is clear both Taliban and ISI are now telling americans to leave by 2014 completely as said by obama with some face saving or else they will be kicked out in a humiliating way like what happened to Russians..

So this ambassador bullshit is just part of that face saving , but the challenge infront of us is how to tackle the violent iran-india backed segments once US withdraws so that peace can be ensured and some real progress in both afghanistan and our tribal regions can be made.

Will be very hostile to Pakistan now... if the taliban come back

Dont think so as Haqqani's and mulla umar do understand our positions and actions...And the actions of Mush dont represent the actual feelings of the nation. And dont take these TTP and afghan taliban as one as they both are different with varying agenda's and sources of funds..Even we dont want extremist and dumb talibans who wanna run their state ancient ways but I am sure there are talibans who wants to progess along with world and are flexible enough to understand the need of unity with Pakistan as they have no other option..On one side is iran and other sides are covered by american dominated CAR's so they will have to trust and do business with Pak only as would be the case with anyother Afghan govt but i prefer talibans as being pashtoons they have more links to pakistan than others in afghanistan.

Well seems like History will repeat itself. Taliban will come to power, their relations with Pakistan will get better and don't know what may happen this time.

If something bad happens then Pakistan will again blame US that they left Taliban and mess to be cleaned by Pakistan.

Seems like no one wants to learn from their mistakes.

Last time Twin-Tower this time Twin-City... Taliban can have Nukes if they become powerful again...

Or wait a minute... "Its and American Trap. " Taliban and Pakistan both will fall into it.. :azn:

After **** defeat from Taliban now this war so called "WOT" against Taliban. lol @ End Game US nee down in front of Taliban and call from negotiations.

I think Ambassador Richard Olson has miss-spelled “wittingly or wittingly” he might have wanted to say that the "opponents of Taliban can be part of future Afghanistan"…

Why? Where are they now..They still are in Afghanistan, a few steps and they are in Pakistan...We didn't see any hostility from them(Afghan Taliban) when Pak-Saud relations were at all time low...Neither do I see in future...
Although cure for all types of Taliban is Pak Army...

We shouldn't be excited...Pakistan should be very careful...eyes wide open...keep a watch all time...USA might have dug a trap for us...

I was referring to this article in particular and the attitude of the Afghan Taliban in general since they (felt) they were betrayed by Pakistan for the US-A taliban government in Kabul is not in our interests:

Taliban Commanders Say They Were Tortured by Pakistani Intelligence - The Daily Beast

Things have changed since 1980's. They will not really forgive us for what we have done and how we joined the US war on terror.

Of all the items mentioned by Amb Olson, I think the one that is most problematic for the Talib will be acceptance of the Afghan constitution - this has been a consistent demand, and a perennial deal breaker
