The dysfunctional megacity: why Dhaka is bursting at the sewers

. .
It is India's misfortune that we are surrounded by countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan and not countries like Korea and Japan.

Its sad that even though so much smaller than India they are still much poor, less industrialized and almost dysfunctional.

Folks are quoting you as they are trying to put some sense into your head. I will throw in one additional inconvenient truth,

"Indian Minister Says 2,000 Girls Are Killed Across the Country Every Day
“You have 2,000 girls who are killed in the womb every day,” Maneka Gandhi told news channel NDTV in an interview. “Some are born and have pillows on their faces choking them.”

Female infanticide is a historic problem in India’s highly patriarchal society, as daughters are often viewed as a burden because of the continuing prevalence of the dowry system.

Sadly, ironically if those girls were conceived in Bangladesh or Pakistan they would all be alive today !!

Dhaka is dysfunctional in the south city. All the gov buildings, banks, business districts and residential areas are occupied in a small area. Improvement works in this area is really hard, not hindering large number of people. If the Gov buildings and business districts are moved somewhere else the condition will improve. Getting clue that these will be moved to new planned township Purbachal.

.
Conditions are only slightly better in some Indian cities. We too, suffer from flooding , poor drainage of sewage etc, maybe not in same magnitude as in Dhaka , but we do undeniably. Perhaps Dhaka needs to build some satellite cities or may be newer cities somewhere else in the country.

.
Our honourable prime minister is doing a great job for our country. We r developing at a rapid pace and have over 34 billion dollars of forex reserve in our central bank. But last time when i checked I saw that Pakistan's net reserve stands at minus something. Shining Pakistan
Talk about how your honorable PM of Shonar Bangla will clean the Dhaka city of the debris, flood and unclean water. Why are u beating about the bushes and boasting about foreign exchange reserves? Are u not ashamed to live in such a nasty country? Oh!! You must be an AL hooligan who earn money by mean way and are not willing to hear an honest criticism.

BD has enough resources, enough fertile lands, enough water, and enough industries,
All it has to do is implement one child policy,

Need to reduce population to 50% or 33%,

I wonder why there is no other big city in Bangladesh other then Dhaka......45000 people sharing per Sq Kl. what will happen in future.

and some people are cheering about forex reserves lol:lol:

At the same time one must remember that western media, be it Guardian, Telegraph and specially the English media will always show a negative side of not just Bangladesh, but also of India and Pakistan.

I remember some Turkish private TV report on Imran Khan, the PTI chief, the principal was a western media house, they deliberately showed Islamabads one and only Afghan Basti, a slum and the only slum in Islamabad whereas more than 98% of the city is all planned and have no slums.

It makes it look as though Islamabad has slums in large areas and had deliberately and purposefully picked the worst areas of Rawalpindi and showed it as Islamabad.

Pick any news from BBC media as well...they will show India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in the worst light as possible.

Quite a few/many parts of Dacca are actually well planned and very green and clean too...

It's something to do with the British empire packing up from subcontinent and the end of Raj...and they had this weird nostalgia about it like...look! things were better when we were there in power...kind of thoughts.

BD needs to control its population growth, that's correct. But the real problem in Bangladesh is the distribution of the population.

About 40% of country's total urban population lives in Dhaka city. No city can function properly with this amount of people.

However, as you rightly said BD has enough fertile land and resources to relocate these people. Easier said than done though. Almost 40-50 privare universities along with some public universities r located inside Dhaka city. Then add thousands of schools colleges and madrasas with it. No wonder this city does not function proprope.

Good thing is Many of these universities have already been told to move their campus from Dhaka city. Government is also trying to relocate all the garments factories that u'll find inside Dhaka city. But obviously these r lengthy procedures and it will take time before we get to see the desired result.

Infact the problem is same across 3 large nations of subcontinent, India / Pak / BD with 50% of the current population would look much different

About 40% of country's total urban population lives in Dhaka city. No city c

So, u have made all those assumptions about me just by reading that one single post of mine? U must be the younger brother of sherlock Holmes that everyone talks about here, right

And no, i m not ashamed to live in my country. It may not be perfect, but it's still my beloved motherland, right? But yes, I don't like Dhaka city due to it's jam packed roads.

Guardian is using some graphic pics, but in reality the traffic is horrendous in the world hands down.
