Yes. Its a delicacy in my region -- Hokkaido. During winter time, its what we eat.

This is one way of eating bear meat, we put it in raw in a hot soup:

I'm actually 1/4th Ainu (my mother's side is Ainu). In the Ainu tradition -- in folklore -- the first gods to help man was a Bear. There is an old Ainu festival called kumamatsuri [Bear Festival] that celebrates this relationship.

There are two types of bears that are wild in Hokkaido: Brown Bear and Black Bear. In my opinion, the one that tastes better is the Brown Bear -- because they're wild and feed on the Salmon that run wild in the rivers of Northern Japan.

Here in Ukraine bear meat have not beign sold for a long time, since Soviet times.

Very interesting incident. I read that it was paranormal activity, to theory of big foot / sasquatch. Probably it was a wolf or bear attack. Sad really. RIP to those who had died...
