Thales To Build Communications satellite For Bangladesh

Thales Alenia Space has won a $250 million contract from Bangladesh to develop the country's first communications satellite known as Bangabandhu-1.

French-Italian firm will build the satellite for the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to be launched into space on December 16 in 2017, various media reported today.

The deal which would save Bangladesh coffers $14 million a year from renting transponders of foreign satellites, Junior telecoms minister Tarana Halim said.

"With the launch of Bangabandhu-1, Bangladesh will become the 57th member of the exclusive club of satellite-owning countries," Halim said at the contract-signing ceremony.

"The satellite will cover Bangladesh, other South Asian countries, Indonesia, the Philippines and several other nations," the minister added.

Early this year Bangladesh bought a satellite orbital slot from Russian company Intersputnik International for $28 million.

Amazing Step from BD. I think now they should also look to invest in something more too from EU like weapons.

. .
This is hell of expensive, any idea about no. of transponders & radio frequency band ?

. . . . .
Not very large nos. of Transponders may be sufficient for BD but very expensive.
In this budget we can launch two satellites with same nos of transponders.

As program prime contractor of this turnkey system, Thales Alenia Space is in charge of the design, production, testing and the delivery in orbit of the satellite

Then previous offer cancelled.
Now with one communication satellite one remote sensing satellite (non military grade) free

Sorry, i don't understand what you mean.
I mean apart from designing, manufacturing & launching cost enough money would spare for remote sensing satellite.
We just launched GSAT-15 which have 24 ku band transponders and 2 GAGAN navigational payloads. Besides that it will also carry 2 Ku-Band beacons.
Total cost of satellite (including insurance & launch) is $ 129 million

Technically, Bangladesh satellite has more transponders. The nav modules and Ku band beacons can't really be counted as 1:1 equivalent to a transponder. I do not know their prices though....

I would attribute the difference in price to the manufacture and don't hate me, perhaps some quality of build/materials used. For example, the platform on which Bangladeshi satellite is based (Spacebus 4000B2) is designed for 3 years more operational time in orbit that GSAT 15. (15 years as opposed to 12)

Aerospatiale → Alcatel Space → Alcatel Alenia Space → Thales Alenia Space: Spacebus-3000/4000B-Class

Also, on wiki page for GSAT 15, price is listed at 860 crore. If my understanding of this term is sufficient that would amount to around 130 mill €, which is slightly more than your figure.

Well, our current Bus design have some limitation which would be rectified I-6 bus & in Euro it would be nearly € 120 million
