BANGKOK, MAY 31:
The leaders of Thailand and India have agreed to accelerate talks aimed at establishing a Free Trade Area Agreement (FTA) between the two countries as soon as possible, Thai official media said on Friday.
The FTA was on the agenda of talks between Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who arrived in Bangkok on Thursday for a two-day official visit.
During a meeting at Government House, Yingluck invited India to invest in a Thai-promoted deep-sea port and special economic zone in Myanmar, according to the Mass Communication Organization of Thailand.
A Thai Foreign Ministry statement said the bilateral meeting reflects the desire of the two sides to elevate Thai-Indian relations to a strategic partnership, based on shared values of democracy and respect for human rights and shared interests in promoting sustainable growth and development.
During Singh’s visit the two prime ministers were scheduled to witness the signing of seven agreements, including an extradition treaty and a memorandum of understanding on exchanging information related to financial transactions in order to counter money laundering.
The enhanced relations between India and Thailand were seen as part of “Look West” policy by Yingluck, who was scheduled to depart on Friday for official visits to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
She will return to Bangkok on Sunday.
