Tesla Zooms Past BMW, Audi Limos In Europe, Closes In On Mercedes

Tesla’s all electric Model S has overtaken established and conventionally powered luxury car market leaders like the BMW 7 series and Audi A8 in their own European backyards, and is threatening the long-established market leader, the Mercedes S class.

That’s the view of pan-European newsletter Automotive Industry Data (AID), quoting its exclusive statistics.

In the first nine months of 2015, Tesla Model S sales of 10,600 in Western Europe exceeded the outgoing BMW 7 Series with 2,650 and the soon to be replaced Audi A8 limousine with 4,700. The Model S was only 800 sales short of the Mercedes S class, compared with a shortfall of 6,200 in the same period last year, AID said.

The fact the great majority of BMW 7s, Mercedes S and Audi A8s are diesel powered is likely to be another factor in Tesla’s favor at least in the near future.

In the past Tesla has done amazingly well in socialist, energy-rich Norway, where the tax on internal combustion engine cars can approach 100 per cent, while electric ones go tax free. But now Tesla’s success has grown across the board with sales of over a 1,000 in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany, followed by sales of between 500 and 850 in markets like Britain, France, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark. Switzerland and Germany don’t subsidize electric cars.

“Given the rise and rise of Tesla sales in these and other European markets, there are high expectations for Tesla’s forthcoming all-new Model X SUV , albeit some sales will no doubt come at the expense of its conventionally dressed Model S brother,” said AID editor Peter Schmidt.

At the Frankfurt Car Show last month, Audi unveiled a Tesla competitor, the all-electric Q6 e-tron SUV, but this won’t appear on the market until 2018. Last week troubled VW said its new flagship Phaeton sedan will be all-electric, but this won’t show until 2019. Meanwhile most of the German alternative engine competition has concentrated on plug-in hybrids, which are very expensive, not very popular, and likely to fall foul of German environmentalists who claim most of the time these vehicles will be using conventional carbon fuel, not electricity.

Germany’s car makers, and prestige sector leading BMW, Audi and Mercedes in particular, received their second shock in little more than three weeks when AID compiled data for Western Europe revealed that in the nine months to September this year Tesla’s Model S has not only outsold previous sector heavyweights such as BMW’s outgoing 7-Series and Audi’s A8 by some considerable margin, but has also sunk its teeth into Mercedes’ top-notch S-Class, which of late has made Europe’s luxury car segment almost its own

Tesla’s high-powered and high-range all-electric Model S, when judged from latest AID compiled figures, appears to have acquired an almost cult-like following among some of Europe’s well-heeled consumers.

Apart from Tesla’s European sales bastion in high-subsidy Norway, where some 3,243 Teslas found buyers so far this year, the data suggests that it is clearly the well-off that are now attracted to Tesla’s pricey crowd-stopping Model S.

That a least is the underlying message from AID’s exclusively compiled sales estimates for the nine months to September this year, showing that sales of Tesla’s Model S in Western Europe have already reached some 10,600 units.

AID’s message to Europe’s leading manufacturers of pricey luxury cars, Tesla means business and Europe’s high-brow prestige car makers have to learn to live with ever-increasing competition for some of their status-conscious customers

I predicted this a few months ago. Hell, I gave up my S class for this baby and ain't regretting. This is F-18 on 4 wheels, electronics, software, torque and luxury. This is probably the finest care of this decade, hands down!!! Its going to cause a LOT of pain for Porsche and other European brands too. The dance has JUST begun :enjoy: :usflag:

It's just the beginning. This car will rape the European luxury car market. Just watch for the next 12 months and see the numbers and revenues. This baby is the ultimate driving machine of this decade. Love the torque and handling on curvy roads, 0 to 60 miles in less then 3 seconds and you'll feel like the seat underneath you was almost left behind as if you flew. Very similar feeling compared to the F-18's take off from an AC with both burners bleeding!!! :yahoo: :usflag:

I briefly drove one in Cali - fun to drive. I was looking forward to buying an Indian electric car here in Bombay - the e2o - unfortunately, even the top variant doesn't come with airbags - so am waiting for the new laws to kick in which make airbags mandatory. It would make an ideal city car. Mahindra e2o – Driven by Goodness

I'm thinking of getting the P85D at the end of this year. I test drove it with the new Auto Pilot System, was pretty cool.
Accelerates really well and decelerates faster as soon you take your foot of the pedal.

I live in Pentagon city and it seems a lot of people are driving Tesla these days.

It would be interesting to see if Europeans start producing electric "muscle cars" since taxing per liter won't be applicable. These would be simple cars with huge electric engines in them as we do here with gasoline cars.

But look where Mercedes is...they should have no return buyers.

Edit: At least they are up 3 notches from last time (yeesh they were even more near the bottom!!)

6 models....that could range from very affordable to high end. But ya, poor performance for Mercedes, i agree.

Tesla isn't even on this list?

Because it was launched recently and is less than like a year or two old. Doesn't have a history of anything. All others listed, had DECADES to fix and mature their platforms, still no one, gets even a 90% score :yahoo::hitwall:

Watch how Tesla will improve as customers provide feedback into its systems. The engine is near perfection with electric motor, so that won't be a big deal. The rest of the issues will be related to electronics and primarily software updates, no big deal.

I have only seen once a Tesla car in German … and that was on a Tesla promo show last year. :lol:
