Only the cars made in the Shanghai factory use the non-optimal Chinese Lithium iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries as they are cheaper to produce but good enough to satisfy the Chinese market. Unfortunately Tesla had to ship some of those cars to Europe and the German buyers immediately complained about the batteries being junk.

The Chinese have been building electric far cars longer than Tesla but their tech wasn't good enough for the export market.


They mostly sold their 100% Ev's to the domestic market and exported hybrid cars instead.

Historically their #1 selling domestic EV's were usually very tiny cars vs the small/mid-sized 4 door sedans of non-Chinese EV makers. This finally changed in 2019 when 4 door cars became popular.

As of Nov 30th 2020 the Tesla Model 3 was the top selling 100% EV in China for 2020 followed by the Wuling Hong Guang Mini.
