There appears to have been a complex and multilayered attack targeting the Corps commander Peshawar.

The attack started off with a hand grenade being thrown at a police patrol on the Ring Road. This resulted in Police reinforcements being sent in, at which point a suicide bomber detonated his vest killing 3 police officials.

Following the suicide bombing there was an assault by possibly upto a dozen armed men that attempted to storm the Corp Commander Peshawar's residence, that was stopped by the LEA'a and Army.

2 killed and 7 suspected attackers arrested from the final armed assault.

The news reports detailing this are below.

PESHAWAR: A man was killed and 13 others, including nine cops, sustained injuries in a hand grenade-cum-suicide attack on a police party in Lateefabad area on Ring Road on Thursday night, police said.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Safwat Ghayyur told the media men that a police party was on a routine duty on Ring Road in the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station when unknown miscreants hurled a hand grenade at the cops, injuring one of them.

“They communicated to the police control about the incident and called for extra resources,î he said and added that two police mobiles were sent to the place of incident. He added that in the meantime a suicide bomber came nearer a police pick-up and blew himself up.

The blast destroyed two police mobiles, a rickshaw and a motorcycle.
Heavy police deployment reached the scene and cordoned off the area and closed Ring Road for traffic. The CCPO further said that one body was found at the spot whose identity was yet to be ascertained. Besides, two legs, most probably of the suicide bomber, were also found. Personnel of the Bomb Disposal Squad also recovered a pressure cooker and explosive material from the nearby fields.

About injured persons, Safwat said that 13 persons sustained injuries, nine of them policemen, and four civilians. The injured were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital where condition of three cops — Sakhawat Shah, Ameer Muhammad and Maqsood Shah — was stated to be critical. Emergency was imposed in the hospital.

Talking to a private news channel, NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain linked the incident to the military operation in Waziristan tribal agency. ìItís reaction to the ongoing military operation in Swat,î he said and termed the incident as a desperate action on the part of the besieged militants in various parts of the country.

APP adds from Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani have strongly condemned the grenade and suicide blast on Ring Road in Peshawar. The president and the prime minister in their separate messages expressed their grief and shock over the loss of precious human lives and injuries caused by the attack.

They said the government was committed to fight terrorism and militancy and such cowardly acts of terrorists will not weaken the governmentís resolve to eliminate the menace. They directed the concerned authorities to ensure the provision of best medical care to those injured in the blast. The president and the prime minister also ordered the authorities to probe the incident and submit a report.

These bastards need to be hit harder in their strongholds of FATA. The pressure is working on them thus they are going for soft targets in the settled areas.

The chickens are coming home to roust!!! we should all thank the ISI and specially Hameed Gul for providing support and training to Talibans, That asshole needs to be put on a pole and hanged. I have never seen so much destruction and collateral damage in all the insurgency around the world. so much for proffessional competence....... Bravo Pak army !!!!!!!!!!

Not quite, but that's a for a later day. Pakistan's policy, should the politicians allow, is going to be final, again, should the politicians allow. Pakistani policy differs from that of the U.S - Lanka had Pakistani advisors, this should offer us some insight and persons there are "lessons learned" we may not be aware of, though I think success in Lanka would not allow it.

Agreed Sir, but with a difference of opinion over comparison with 'Success' in Sri Lanka. Lankans were fighting with a group of people who are an ethnic minority there, which can not be compared to what is going on in Pakistan. From the reports coming out of there, their army never cared about the lives of Tamil citizens, and did not hesitate to bombard 'human shields' used by LTTE. Both parties used excessive force, which was not a justified act from Government's side.

OTOH, in Pakistan, the civilian casualties seem to be a lot lesser & I am sure everyone wants to keep it the same way. So, yes, Lankan advisors would be useful, but you may not be able to exactly replicate their tactics.

hmmm...Baitullah and his TTP thugs are getting really desperate and are clearly feeling the pressure. They probably realize that their heads are going to be on the chopping block soon - the end-game is near!

this was right outside my aunties house literally 20 metres from her houses is the army housing and base and we were so worried and when we got through she was so relaxed telling us its been on for 6 hours. InshAllah the innocent public will hopefully be spared of these barbarics but u dont understand how nerve racking that is to hear about and unfortunately people say it will only get worse when the waziristan op starts. On the other hand many think its pure desperation from them and hence the overly aggressive tactics. What cowards using our people as shields

Pakistani public opinion has turned against them strongly - the terrorists are extremely desperate to get that tide reversed.

You have to realize that they stand no chance of survival in the long run if public opinion remains against them, and Al Qaeda and the Taliban will thrown everything they have at trying to convince Pakistanis that the military confrontation aimed at rooting them out is not worth the damage.

So far in fact the terrorists have not attacked too many 'soft civilian targets' - no doubt before this is over we shall see those as well, if the attacks against the government and military alone do not work.

Pray the people of Pakistan and its institutions do not back down, and instead channel the resulting rage against these Takfiris. If nothing else this is validation of the route we have chosen - either Pakistan survives or these scum survive.

We should also keep India and Israel in the list of suspects. There is possibility they are supporting these terrorist for these activities and also they are expert in media propoganda.

Indeed, but first we rout the cancer within.

The Indians and Israelis cannot act, if they are involved, without the connivance of some treasonous Pakistanis and Muslims, with whom we are now engaged in war.

These are today's equivalents of Mir jaffar and the rebels who slew Hazrat Uthman.

Lets stay away from conspiracy theories and focus on the logical culprits - the taliban and their takfiri supporters. Before you can destroy the enemy, you have focus on the enemy. Blaming everyone under the sun does'nt get you anywhere.

I believe soft target is anything that is within the settled areas incorporating considerable civilian population. The specific target being a military personality does not matter in my opinion. Secondly, all of the major targets have been soft targets including allof the hotels.
