The attacks were escelated after Morsi was ousted and the ensuing political crisis, however, strikes against soldiers and infrastructure started in 2011 and continued in 2012/3.

In August 2012 a similar operation was conducted by militants in the Sinai which resulted in the death of 16 border guards under then President Morsi. This operation comes as a result of the Libyan crisis and the instability there and on the western border.
