ADEN — Tens of thousands of Yemenis rallied in Aden on Thursday in support of separatist forces who took over the southern port, the temporary seat of Yemen’s Saudi-backed government, in a move that exposed rifts in a Sunni Muslim military coalition.

The United Arab Emirates-backed southern separatists seized control of government military bases last weekend, fracturing the Saudi-led alliance battling the Iran-aligned Houthi group and complicating U.N. peace efforts to end the war.

Demonstrators demanded recognition of southerners’ right to self-rule in Aden, where the government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi is based after being ousted from power in the capital Sanaa by the Houthis in late 2014.

Many traveled into Aden from other southern provinces on Wednesday, sleeping overnight in the central parade square. One man held up a battered old identity document from former South Yemen and many waved the South Yemen flag.

“We call on the international community and the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE to respect the southern people as a key partner in stemming the Persian tide in the region and fighting terrorism to achieve…regional and global stability,” said a statement to mark the rally.

The separatists are a major component of the Western-backed alliance that intervened in Yemen against the Houthis in March 2015, but have a rival agenda to Hadi’s government. The war has revived old strains between north and south Yemen, formerly separate countries that united into a single state in 1990.

The Southern Transitional Council (STC) took over Aden after accusing the Islah party allied to Hadi of being complicit in a Houthi missile attack on southern forces earlier this month, a charge the party denies.

A local official told Reuters that separatist forces had moved away from the nearly empty presidential palace and central bank. There was no sign yet they had quit the military camps.

An STC spokesman said on Wednesday they would keep control unless the Islamist Islah and northerners were removed from positions of power in the south.

Hadi’s government has called the move a “coup.” The UAE has echoed a Saudi call for dialog to exit the crisis but did not call on southern forces it funds and arms to cede control.

Riyadh wants to host a summit to resolve matters. Hadi’s government said it would not participate until STC forces withdraw and asked Abu Dhabi to stop backing them.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia’s main military ally on the ground for most of the war, has scaled back its presence in Yemen since June amid Western pressure to end the war. It said it will continue to back some 90,000 Yemeni forces made up of southern separatists and coastal plain fighters.

The UAE pull-back and the Aden crisis come as the United Nations tries to reduce tensions throughout the country to pave the way for peace talks. The Houthis, who control Sanaa and most big urban centers, point to Aden as proof that Hadi is unfit to rule and cannot be a serious partner in any negotiations.

“We respect the masses gathered in our beloved south today. Anyone who does not respect the multitudes in the north and south who reject Hadi and his followers must be sick and deranged,” Houthi deputy foreign minister Hussein al-Azzi tweeted.

The United Nations says the war, which has killed tens of thousands and pushed Yemen to the brink of famine, needs an inclusive political solution.

. . . . . . .
Separatist take over or separation of South yemen ?

The Southern Military Council is part of the coalition against the Houthi terrorist cult. They have not taken over anything other than some areas in Aden. There is negotiation going on with the Hadi representatives on the ground and KSA and UAE are both mediating.

Hadi is not important here as he is just a figurehead.

KSA is formally against the separation of Yemen into two parts again (before there were even more) but from the viewpoint of KSA it would be easier to control Yemen this way and could lead to Southern Yemen (75% of Yemen's geography) joining KSA in an union in the future and given KSA direct access to the Arabian Sea.

I talked about this many years ago as an opportunity (before the intervention in 2015) but not sure if it would require a change of guard and people involved in the policy making. Hard to know what the long-term plans are.

Fact of the matter is that if the Southern Yemenis want autonomy (long-term) then no outsider can do anything and nobody is interested in going to war against people that are not against us or whom we have no conflict with, for the sake of keeping Yemen unity when Yemenis themselves don't want it (in case that proves to the be case).

Personally I am against further fragmentation in the Arab world, in particular in Arabia, but my opinions don't matter.

It is very sad that yemen is becoming next Syria

Not really. Less than 80.000 have died in Yemen in the past 8 years. In Syria that number is 8 times larger. Far more destruction in Syria as well. Most of Yemen (90%) have not undergone much destruction and some areas are totally unharmed in fact.

It does not appear KSA can take Sanaa within the next 10 years. I wonder what happens after Hadi dies of old age. Who will be Yemen president?

KSA could easily take Sana'a if we used a similar approach as your beloved Al-Assad. I already told you that. In fact KSA could flatten the small area of Yemen that remains in the control of the Houthi's. All it would take would be to kill 100.000's of people (civilians included). That would obviously be an insane approach. KSA is not going to deploy 100.000's of soldiers when 90% of Yemen, almost the entire coastline and border areas are under our control, including all the gas and oil installations, major ports etc. The Houthis can live in their densely populated mountainous areas and decay there until the civilians rise up against them (further) due to the misery that the Houthi's have inflicted.

How many times do you need to be told that Hadi is irrelevant and just a figurehead? Once he dies of old age or disease or whatever, he will be replaced by another representative of the legitimate Yemeni government. Not that difficult.

The moment KSA bombs civilians randomly they lose all western support. BTW, if Assad wanted to he could level Idlib city to the ground using Smerch. But that would invite western military intervention which is why Idlib city is not touched.

What can be done or said when you see one brother killing another in the name of I don't know what?? it just saddens me. Look what is happening in Syria and look at the miseries of Yemeni people, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Palestine. Cant we just set aside our personal agendas and let the people of each country or region decide their fate through peaceful means. When will I see the day when there will be peace and prosperity in the Muslim world? Alas. May Allah guide us all.

You are comparing Al-Assad (supposed Syrian "president") trying to liberate his freaking "OWN" country and comparing it with KSA' foreign intervention in a foreign country, lol, that is almost the size of Iraq and Syria combined and which a 100 times more challenging geography. Of course other rules apply within your own country.

Fact is the that Houthi terrorist cult have no future in Yemen and are incredibly incompetent people. The areas that they control will not forever be content with living in a hellhole without any future. Yemen cannot escape its geography and KSA's future is tied with that of Yemen's future. Any sane Yemeni patriot should be hoping and praying for as powerful and united Arabia as possible.

. .
Futher and further grouping. No unity. Saudi should just leave yemen and focus on its borders and let these groups kill each other.
