Sony engineers have learned from termites that wood can be consumed to produce energy. At an environmental products fair in Tokyo, Sony employees invited children to put paper bits in a mixture of enzymes & water and watch it turn into a source of electrical energy in just a few minutes. The new battery is capable of powering a small electric motor. Sony earlier developed the sugar-powered battery that delivered highest output and the new research is a part of the ongoing project to developed a perfect bio-battery.
Sony Paper Based Battery Demonstration @ Tokyo.
Enzymes break the cellulose (long strands of glucose) found in paper and another enzyme produces hydrogen ions along with electrons from these broken cellulose chains. The electrons can be routed to the external circuit to power small electric components. At present the paper based batteries arent capable of replacing the regular batteries; but are powerful enough to make your digital music player run. Were already imagining a future where the circuits will be printed on a paper theyll derive power from. PCBs may take a break. Whats your take?
