To mark China's 32nd Teachers' Day, which falls on Sept. 10 every year, President Xi Jinping on Friday took a trip down memory lane and visited his old school.

He took the opportunity of Teachers' Day to extend his appreciation to the country's educators for their diligence and commitment.

Xi attended Beijing Bayi School, Haidian District, during his elementary and junior high school years. During his visit he commented on the school's dynamic, inspirational environment and remarked on the many positive changes since his time as a student.

Education determines our lives today, and our future, he said, adding that educational reform will play a fundamental and guiding role in China's wider development story.

During his visit, Xi was shown the library and viewed exhibitions on the school's history and defense education.

The school also shared some archive photographs taken of Xi when he was a student. He said he cherished these formative years and remembered his lessons and fellow students fondly.

As one of Beijing's renowned schools, Bayi places a lot of focus on the sciences as a gateway to encouraging creativity and imagination.

Xi said children must be equipped with the fundamental skills of creative thinking and practical ability.

The president also talked with a group of pupils who were playing football and posed for photos with them. An avid supporter of soccer in education, Xi encouraged the students to aspire to be excellent soccer players.

While touring some of the school's older buildings, he also met with some of his former teachers, and he took the opportunity to thank them for all they did for him and wished them happy, healthy lives.

Xi also talked with faculty members and students about school management, education and their dreams and aspirations.

The importance of knowledge and talent cannot be underestimated, Xi said, and education must continue to be improved.

Moreover, he said, the teaching of ideology, ethics and socialist core values should be reinforced so that students leave the education system as confident, dignified, independent members of society.

The benefits of development in education must be made available to all Chinese, he added.

To this end, he pledged greater support across the whole education system -- from kindergarten to high school.

The distribution of resources should be optimized so that there is no difference in education quality between schools in cities and rural areas.

Funding in revolutionary bases, ethnic, remote and impoverished areas needs to be increased and education should be part of the ongoing poverty-relief campaign.

"We must stop poverty from being passed on to future generations. Every child should be confident in themselves and their future," he said.

Xi called on teachers to instill in their students a love of the motherland, the people, and the Communist Party of China.

Meanwhile, Party committees and governments at all levels should create suitable conditions so that teachers are "content and enthusiastic," Xi said.

Elementary and high school students are the future of China, Xi said.

Students should strive to be a person of "pure heart, sound personality, and integrity," and "educated, compassionate and ready to take on responsibilities," Xi said.

Xi urged Party committees and governments at all levels to make education a priority, and deepen educational reforms.

In visit to alma mater, Xi calls for equality

President Xi Jinping shrugged off his official title and enjoyed school time again when he visited his alma mater on Friday ahead of Teacher's Day on Saturday.

When Shen Jun, the head of Bayi School, where Xi spent his primary and junior high school years, said, "Welcome the president back to school", Xi said, "There is no president in school, but only teachers and students".

Xi emphasized the importance of basic education and equal access to education.

"Education equality is the basis of social equality," he said. "We must ensure education equality to enhance social equality."

Xi said measures must be taken to narrow the gap in educational resources and quality between rural and urban areas, with special aid given to poverty-stricken places and areas mainly populated by ethnic groups.

Stopping at the soccer field where students were training, Xi, a soccer fan, recalled the old days when he played on the same field, which is grass now but was dirt and mud 50 years ago.

He then had a conversation with teachers, including Chen Qiuying, who taught him Chinese back then.

Chen recalled that Xi seemed more mature than his classmates then. "For example, he always gave way to others first when they entered the classroom. He didn't speak but gestured. It was uncommon among teenagers."

In 1969, Xi, then 15, went to Shaanxi province, where he spent seven years as a rural laborer. He then studied at Beijing's Tsinghua University from 1975 to 1979, majoring in chemical engineering.

Xi has often visited Chen since. In the 1990s, Xi, who was then the deputy Party chief of Fujian province, and his wife, Peng Liyuan, the famous singer, once invited Chen to sing karaoke when she was on a business trip in Fujian, Chen said.

If I remember correctly, the school is sandwiched between Haidian Park and People's University of which the attached school is top1 in Haidian.

My warm greetings to all my fellow brothers and sisters in the teaching profession. Eastern students still value teachers, and have a love for learning, something waining in the West sadly, where classroom discipline takes up the bulk of a teacher's time.

Teachers are one of the most respected profession....
Happy Teacher's Day!

Nice to see this in China. in the west, some students treat teachers like shit. Teachers are not respected profession in Canada. People go in it for the 8 weeks vacation, high pay, low effort, stability of the job. Students learn more surfing the internet.

this type of incident too common in the west, particularly the US.

Teacher's Day is a very big deal in China, an important day.
I think this is due to the Confucian ethics and culture which stresses a lot on education.

How Do Different Countries Celebrate Teachers' Day?

September 10 marks the 32nd Teachers' Day in China. Known as "engineers of the soul," education professionals are traditionally shown extra respect at this time of year, receiving honors and gifts for the occasion.

Origin of Teachers' Day in China

The idea of celebrating Teachers' Day was first raised in 1931. Prestigious educators of the time, Tai Shuangqiu (1897-1976) and Cheng Qibao (1895-1975) together set June 6 as the special date in a bid to improve living conditions, provide teachers with protection and promote training. Their proposal was approved by the then Kuomintang government in 1932.

In 1939, however, the Kuomintang government changed the date of Teachers' Day to August 27, the birthday of Chinese philosopher Confucius (551- 479 BC).

In 1951, the National Education Labor Union, today's Ministry of Education, was established. The union then decided to celebrate Teachers' Day on May 1, International Labor Day, recognizing teachers as part of the working class.

On January 1985, the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislative body, stipulated September 10 as Teachers' Day to develop the tradition of respecting teachers, improve their status and draw attention to education. Since the first Teachers' Day on September 10, teachers have celebrated their own unique festival every year.

Teachers' Day around the World

Some 21 countries celebrate a common Teachers' Day on October 5, known as World Teachers' Day. However, many countries celebrate the special festival on different dates with different traditions.

China: Enjoy Half Day Off and Gifts

On Teachers' Day, Chinese teachers usually have a half day off to relax. Meanwhile, both schools and students prepare flowers and gifts for them.

Germany: Show Gifts and Write Thank-you Notes

June 12 is National Teachers' Day in Germany. Schools and communities hold activities to respect teachers. When a teacher receives a gift, he or she needs to show it to all the students and write a thank-you note.

Australia: Pay for Expensive Gifts

Australia celebrates Teachers' Day on the last Friday in October. Teachers usually receive gifts from their students. If the gift is expensive, the teacher needs to pay for it, or else it might come under scrutiny from the country's Commission Against Corruption.

Singapore: Watch Performances

Traditionally celebrated on September 1, Teachers' Day has shifted to the first Friday of the month since 2011, enabling teachers to have a long weekend by taking a Friday off. Celebrations are normally conducted the day before. Students put on performances to entertain and honor their teachers.

Chile: Receive Gifts and Cakes from Parents

Teachers' Day is October 16 in Chile. Generally, parents plan activities and gifts for the teachers of their children, sending cakes to celebrate the festival.

U.S.: Receive Gifts or Thank-you Cards

In the States, National Teacher Day falls on Tuesday during Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place in the first full week of May. Students often show appreciation for their teachers with gifts or thank-you cards.
