Tata-Sikorsky chopper bound for Brazil


With flight tests of its first civilian helicopter, the S-92, concluding successfully, the Tata-Sikorsky joint venture is getting ready to go global.

The first S-92, to be used for civilian purposes, is now being customised for supply to Lider Aviacao of Brazil, an aircraft and helicopter charter service provider.

Sikorsky has a joint venture with the Tata group to manufacture and supply helicopter components.

The components — numbering around 4,300 — are then supplied to Hyderabad-based Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), which has the mandate to manufacture cabins and fit the components made by the joint venture.

These airframes are then sent to Sikorsky’s facility in Pennsylvania for further assembly of cockpits, rotors and other systems, for supply to customers.

According to company officials, TASL has so far supplied about 15 airframes to the US company.

TASL is currently supplying around two airframes per month, though the intent is to scale it up to three per month by 2013.

Sikorsky has also been keen on participating in the Indian defence procurement programme by manufacturing and supplying military range helicopters.

“The partnership with Tatas will be extended to manufacturing and assembling Sikorsky military helicopters, besides making Sikorsky S-92 helicopter cabins. We have applied to the Indian government and are expecting the licence shortly,” Steve Estill, Sikorsky’s vice-president, strategic partnerships, had told journalists recently in Hyderabad.

According to him, the company would manufacture naval multi-role helicopters for the Indian Navy subject to grant of the licence.


In fact, the Sikorsky team is said to be mulling development of India operations as a hub for manufacturing its helicopter range, including expanding its capacity to manufacture S-92 civilian helicopters.

While Sikorsky officials confirm that the Indian military requirements are different due to a difficult terrain, it would test the waters for manufacturing these helicopters by conducting the initial research and development in India to tailor-make the machines to Indian conditions.

S70, because they already wants to divert parts of the Black Hawk production to India and again, not awsome since they only outsource the production of older stuff, but don't share critical ToT or jointly develop with us. The US is already thinking about the Black Hawk replacement with a NG high speed helicopter, let them offer a co-development of it to us, THAT WOULD BE AEWSOME!
 
TATA manufacturing the N-MRH is a mouth-watering prospect for the Indian military industrial complex and would be a landmark moment and if handled properly by TATA could be a turning point for the entire face of the Indian defence scene as the military and GoI/MoD sees tangible results from a pvt player on a major defenc edeal. Just hope MoD are bold enough to go for the move, with the IN being the customer and their own puch for pvt players to be given deals it is a strong likelihood. Indian military industrial complex is riding high right now and the only way seems to be up and up!!
