Taseer to be remembered for fight against obscurantism: Zardari

KARACHI: On the second death anniversary of former governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday that Taseer would be long remembered for upholding the cause of minorities and for fighting against the forces of bigotry and obscurantism.

The president said that the assassination of Salman Taseer had not just been a loss to any political party or to a particular segment of society, but it was a loss to the nation. He said that Taseer had been endowed with rare qualities of head and heart who faced the vicissitudes of life with great composure and courage.

The president said that Taseer would be remembered for standing up to religious extremism and bigotry and for standing by the side of those who were persecuted in the name of religion. The president also prayed for eternal peace to Salman Taseer and for all those who had laid down their lives for noble causes

Salman Taseer! A true hero of Pakistan. He was one of the most powerful politicians, very rich, educated, from a cultured, literate family, the Governor of Punjab. He and his family could have lived prosperous and quiet lives either in Pakistan or anywhere abroad. And yet he chose to defend a defense-less poor Christian woman despite all known threats in such cases and despite threats against himself. In the end he gave his life.
You can't find a better martyr for humanity than Salman Taseer in the contemporary world.
