General Dynamics to beat out Germany for Saudi tank deal-report

U.S. defence firm General Dynamics is in talks to deliver battle tanks to Saudi Arabia, beating out German rival Krauss-Maffei Wegmann for the lucrative deal, a German newspaper reported.

Handelsblatt daily cited industry sources as saying on Friday that a deal for Saudi Arabia to buy M1 Abrams tanks from General Dynamics was already in sight.

General Dynamics and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann were not immediately available for comment.

There has been speculation for months that Saudi Arabia could order more than 200 Leopard 2 tanks from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, though the company has never confirmed such reports.

According to other unconfirmed media reports, Germany gave pre-approval for the export of 270 Leopard 2 tanks to Saudi Arabia in 2011.

Defence sources in Germany have said that the German government wanted to hold off making a decision until after federal elections in September, and Handelsblatt speculated on Friday that Saudi Arabia was no longer willing to wait.

Arms exports are a sensitive issue in Germany given its Nazi past as well as the role arms makers such as Krupp played in feeding 19th and 20th century wars with exports to both sides of conflicts.

Peer Steinbrueck, a leader of the opposition Social Democrats running against German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the election, has criticised her government for letting arms exports surge.

After World War Two, successive West German and later united German governments placed tight restrictions on arms exports, especially to regions where there were armed conflicts or where human rights were poorly respected.

Qatar plans to buy 118 Leopard tanks from Germany - newspaper

Qatar aims to buy 118 more Leopard tanks from Germany before the football World Cup championships in 2022 for several billion euros, a German newspaper reported on Sunday.

It also plans to buy 16 tank howitzers, Bild am Sonntag reported citing government sources in Qatar.

The equipment is made by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall. Spokesmen were not immediately available for comment in Qatar or at Krauss-Maffei or Rheinmetall.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government approved the purchase of 62 Leopard tanks and 24 howitzers in the spring.

Arms exports are a sensitive issue in Germany given the country's Nazi past and the role arms makers like Krupp played in fuelling wars in previous centuries.

Peer Steinbrueck, Merkel's opposition Social Democrat (SPD) challenger in September's election, has attacked her government for letting arms exports surge and said he would end that if his centre-left alliance wins.

After World War Two, West German and united German governments placed tight restrictions on arms exports, especially to regions where there were armed conflicts or which had poor human rights records.

They have too much money, they will buy things even if it is not needed

Qatar is an island and their only land border (sort of) is with Saudi Arabia.

Who the hell are they buying armor for ?

You just said it: Their only border is with Saudi Arabia. The two countries do not see eye to eye (pun not intended) on many issues. During the 90s, Saudis pushed Qataris back from the border by claiming that Qatar's border post was in Saudi territory. That is the reason why Qataris allowed USA to set up a huge base on their soil.

Qatar is rich and therefore fears others, especially Saudis.

Can't be an Island if they have a Land border with KSA....:D

Bro, when you have water on three sides and land on one side, It is called a "Peninsula", not an Island.

An Island is surrounded by water on all four sides.

Qatar is a Peninsula....

Just like Saudi Arabia is a Peninsula....

Qatar is not really an island. They have a 60 km long border with KSA.

They are obviously buying it for their own army aside from the larger Peninsula Shield Force, at least I hope so. If not then we need to annex them as we annexed Bahrain.

That isn't true. Germany has already committed itself to deliver 277 Leopard 2 tanks to KSA.

Your are right, The deal has already been finalized

The issue we have with them was to get ~800 tanks. I'm in Germany now BTW, I will be back in 2 days :yay:

Talk to them mate, we need the rest. :raise:

Enjoy your time being there....
