Taliban Gains, India Loses From Trump's Afghan Deal | The Wire | Karan Thapar

. . .
Trump asked India to send troops to Afghanistan a year back. India refused.
I think that was a strategic mistake on India's part. India's mistake has cost India a strategic loss, but India, as always has, was depending on the West to defeat the Taliban. Now India should sit back and reap the sour fruit.

I don’t think India cares about defeating the Taliban, that was a US fetish. All India cared about is having the space to operate against Pakistan. US occupation of Afghanistan provided that, including the US looking the other way. Now the space is lost, for the moment. This doesn’t mean India is done in Afghanistan. Far from it. It’s just the game has changed.

If Taliban comes to power, it's a loss for the modern educated Afghans.

The rest of the world will likely keep a safe distance, and businesses will stay away. Not sure whether the Chinese will consider being there, either.

If they don't modernize, the Taliban and similar groups will serve as an endless supply of front line mercenaries or ideological fighters, in the absence of proper industry or employment.
