The Taliban launched a major attack on an army base in southern Kandahar province, killing at least 43 Afghan soldiers.

The brazen assault on Thursday began with two suicide car bombings, setting off several hours of fighting.

Of 60 soldiers manning the base, 43 were killed, nine wounded, and six missing after Taliban fighters stormed the camp in the middle of the night, the defence ministry said in a statement.

At least nine Taliban were also reported killed at the base in the Chashmo area of Maiwand district.

It was the third assault on a security installation this week. Eighty people were killed and 300 wounded in attacks on Tuesday in Afghanistan's southeast - the bloodiest day in the war-torn country in almost five months.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack in a media statement.

Defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told AFP news agency that the assailants detonated at least one explosive-packed truck and razed the compound.

"We think the militants used an explosive-packed Humvee vehicle to detonate the gate of the base and we are looking to see if there was more than one," Waziri said.

"Unfortunately there is nothing left inside the camp. They have burned down everything they found inside. We have sent a delegation to assess the situation. The base is under ANA [Afghan National Army] control," he added.

Afghan forces have struggled to combat a resurgent Taliban since the US and NATO forces formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014.

The base is under ANA [Afghan National Army] control," he added.

Well, apparently not or the attack would have failed?

I wonder if Pakistan should not offer to train the ANA.
Have them come here and learn because US training
is very nice but the ANA doesn't have the equipment
and means the big modern armies do and further down,
the Talibans don't fight like Western troops.
Pakistan does and knows the local type of fighting.

Great day to you, good mate, Tay.

As always, Sir said a lot in few lines that I wish to have such art.

However, training ANA is not possible under current situation and ANA's takes against Pakistan. Unfortunately, we would have helped them to deal with such urban war style etc but they already are a sold out. Moral is so low that in my opinion, NATO etc itself observed widely about ANA even soldiers are involved in selling weapons to Taliban for mere dollars. Also, read it somewhere else too that, Taliban came in Humvee(s).... eyes wide open that how they get hold of such vehicles or stole right from under the nose of NATO.

However, current ANA is more of consisting the warlords and mostly being promoted to Generals as to be pleased for their services so that ruling Kabul can have the seat though, unfortunately limited to Kabul only but with unlimited number of Generals. Pakistan has been presenting the solutions in different ways but ANA/NDS is busy with India and ISIS more than fighting for the country and the reason again is sell out for money only.

Have a nice time Sir. Good to read from you.

Taliban seems to have taken trump on his word... they seem to be slaughtering afghan national army in this week. This is second major attack in that many days...and third in this week I think...I hope resolute response forces get their act together soon

@The Eagle ( sorry MRC ;) )

Yes, the ANA is not really a unified army and
includes quite a few "bad apples", I agree.

But Pakistan needs not train the low-lives.
Pak Army could select the honest ones and work
only with those. The similarity in cultures is more
important, especially mil culture. Us westerners
now almost crumble under the load of materials
whereas the high mountain mobility of locals is
impressive in part due to travelling light.
The ANA doesn't have the logistics ( APC, transport
planes, long-haul trucks, etc ) to play it that way.

I trust that the best most loyal officers from Pakistan
could both train and sieve through the Afghans they'd
be training better than any Westerners ever could.
And if the ANA selected troops trained here, they'd be
away from their deleterious environment doing so.

But I defer to your better knowledge of the milieu.

All the best to you and yours, Tay.

RIP sad news .

But does taliban claim it and source is ....?????????

2 days ago we got a news akhunzada has order for cease fire..
but CIA pump the isis against them,,,

it is a double face and satan policy by USA
on one side you are begging for peace and then you start drones killing
using your isis proxy along with...

NO PEACE....

.
It seems the Afghan Taliban is emboldened.

LOL even USA wants the Afghan Taliban to negotiate on the table.

But the Afghan Taliban does not want to, because they are winning the war.

And lets not forget the cultural and language similarities - second biggest ethnic group in Pakistan Army is Pashtuns (30% at least I think).

Why should Pakistan help train an enemy which seeks to wipe Pakistan off the map?

.
Think of it as a way to get both some of the ANA
to be able to do its job over the Durand line so
that less "action" occurs here and establish a
relation with select and trusted BIA for the future.

It certainly won't fix the whole of the problem with
Afghanistan ( which I fear no one even themselves
can ) but it's a step to keep it contained.

Have a great day mate, Tay.
