Aaa hah ... daal main kuch kala tha :-) -- I say we tell Ghani sab to shove it -- lol

"Take Tajikistan, but give Afghanistan to India: Ghani’s proposal to Pakistan can change the narrative in South Asia" on First Post here, excerpts below:

Here is a bit of hard news that sums up the tone and tenor of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s just-concluded India visit (27-29 April) and what concrete deliverables came India’s way. The Ghani administration has bluntly told Pakistan that Afghanistan can help Pakistan get access to Tajikistan if Pakistan helps India to access Afghanistan.

This is huge! Ghani himself conveyed this to his Indian interlocutors during his formal talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

This alone shows how greatly successful Ghani’s India visit has been though he has come to India after China, Pakistan, the United States and Saudi Arabia.
...

Ghani’s "Take Tajikistan from us but give Afghanistan to India" approach with Pakistan in terms of access is bone dry diplomacy and hits the nail on the head without any ado or prologues or prevarications.
...

What Pakistan needs to understand is that it cannot aspire for northern connectivity and hope to get Afghanistan’s help in getting access to Tajikistan without making important concessions on its southern connectivity and allowing India access to Afghanistan.

...

Prime Minister Modi himself dropped a hint of connectivity being the top most theme in his talks with President Ghani when he remarked thus in his media statement with Ghani by his side: "We are ready to welcome Afghan trucks at the ICP (Indian check post) Attari."

...

Pakistan is dead serious about reaching out to Tajikistan which it cannot do without the help of Afghanistan. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan have almost finalised draft of a landmark trilateral transit agreement among the three countries, hitherto known by different names. Afghanistan is calling it APTTTA or Afghanistan-Pakistan-Tajikistan Trilateral Transit Trade Agreement while Pakistan called it APTTTTA when it sent in January this year its final draft proposal to Afghan and Tajik governments and sought their views.

The only problem Ghani failed to realise is that Afghanistan does not have a bargaining position. To survive Afghanistan needs access to Pakistani ports, whereas we are not desperate to have access to Tajikistan.

We are enemies with india,

We have no issue with Afghanistan trading with india but it cant be through Pakistan

We do however expect a easy ride to Central asia, if Afghanistan refuses then, Afghanistan will have a problem

. .
This is why if you are a landlocked country you are at the mercy of others and in this region all roads lead to Pakistan.

.
Thats out of question for me. Rather they should concentrate on sea. As for Tajikistan and rest of CARs we should concentrate through China.

.
Look at the map below. The green line follows the Karakorum Highway [ KKH ] from Islamabad,Pakistan to Kashgar,China, to Dushanbe,Tajikistan. Now frigg off India. No you can't have access. Your more then welcome to build a bridge over Pakistan.

This route is only 100 miles longer [ 700 miles ] then through Afghanistan and given insecurity and the terrible roads in Afghanistan this green route is safer and faster and more economical. With additional investment expected as announced by the Chinese Premier and the economic corridor this route will be converted to expressway.

Tell Modee he is going to have to wait a long time before he sees a Afghan truck at Attari - For now Pakistani Tanks will suffice.

Do you notice the three languages on KKH in Pakistan? English, Chinese and Russian. Why Russian? You got, it's because it connects to Russian speaking Central Asia [ Tajikistan included ] and Russia itself further north. Tell that to Modee.

Afghanistan can also access the waters through Iran, Chabahar port will be quite close, although Gwadar will be better.

.
Afghanistan has access to Karachi port through APTTA. India exports to Afghanistan has been excluded so India is using Chabahar port and the highway to Afghanistan through Iran for its exports to Afghanistan. Afghanistan can export to India through Pakistan at the Wagah-Attari border but Indian exports cannot pass through Pakistan to Afghanistan. Pakistan exports to Central Asia are negligible and we can improve the highway link through China. Ghani is just playing with words without substance to keep Indians happy and nothing will change in this policy.

Most of Afghanistan's population and economic centers are in the east, so they will want to use Gwadar to save on fuel costs, time, and distance.

You want to buy peanut from Kabul from Delhi? Yes sir. Okay me send truck 1,000 miles to Mumbai. Ship take truck to Chah Bahar another 800 miles. Truck drives north through Iran across into Afghanistan, drive 1,000 miles to Kabul. Here is your peeeeeNut that travelled nearly 2,700 miles. Take about 5 days at best.

Pakistan influence is over ... ha ha ha !

or just 600 miles through Pakistan in less than day !

Edit: Even NATO and US found that the most effective transport into Afghanistan was through Khyber Pass, Pakistan and thats why 80% of NATO supply was through Pakistan. As said above Kabul and other centres of population are next to Pak border in fact Kabul is only 120 miles from Peshawar and just 220 miles from Islamabad. For referance Delhi is nearly 400 miles from Islamabad.

Had I been an Afghan, I would have done the same. It's the most logical thing to do.
However, Indian bureaucrats and probably Iranians as well, will present Chabahar port as a means to develop the Western areas. They will point out that it is always better to have multiple options, reduces dependency and transport cost.
These are killer points, an offer you cannot refuse.

Chahbahar port and highway to Afghanistan through Iran is ONLY for Indian exports to Afghanistan. Rest of the Afghan trade is through Pakistan. But Afghanistan needs Chahbahar as an alternative to Karachi. Both Iran and Afghanistan are milking India to develop Chahbahar and the highway to Afghanistan and the Indians have no choice. So win-win for all three countries.
