TAIPEI (Reuters) - China’s armed forces are growing in their prowess but still lack the capability to launch a full assault on Taiwan, the island’s defense ministry said on Monday.

Xi is overseeing an impressive military modernization program, adding stealth fighters, aircraft carriers and other equipment, and the Chinese air force and navy have undertaken regular exercises or missions close to Taiwan.

In its annual report on China’s military prowess delivered to parliament, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry laid out scenarios for Chinese actions, including blockades and seizing offshore islands.

It said China’s military continues to dedicate itself to strengthening live fire drills, building its strength for new types of battle and developing emerging technology and weapons.

“But on the operation of tactics and strategy toward Taiwan, it is still restricted by the natural geographic environment of the Taiwan Strait, and its landing equipment and logistics abilities are insufficient,” it added.

“It still does not have the formal combat capability to fully assault Taiwan.”

President Tsai Ing-wen has made bolstering Taiwan’s own defenses a priority, building up its domestic defense industry and buying more equipment from the United States, the island’s most important arms supplier and international backer.

Tsai says she wants peace with China and will not provoke conflict, but last week voiced concern about accidental hostilities erupting due to increased regional tensions.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said it was continuing to pay close attention to Chinese threats, both actual and verbal, and while it did not seek war, it was also not afraid of it.

Taiwan continues to give it hard to China, now Taiwan is fisting the Chinese.

I am waiting for more threats, empty words, etc against Taiwan.

What would you expect Taiwan to say? We will be annihilated by a Chinese assault? Even Tsai Ing Wen says Taiwan can only hold out 24 hours before massive international assistance is needed.

Damn, china did exercise every other week. No one (not even taiwan) cared about it.

PajeetsSling isn't an Israeli, it's a common Indiot.
IIRC, the Taiwan Minister of Defense a couple years back could not even identify a J-20 from multiple pictures of fighter jets  :omghaha:. Of course, they are still a notch above the Indians but not much better.

question for our Chinese PDFers...taiwan is not all that far away, well within the PLA long range artillery & MRLS. why not just start pounding them into submission. you know as well as I do that the u.s. will send the 7th fleet to sit comfortably "behind" taiwan and just make frowny faces at Beijing, no way in hell is the u.s. gonna send any of its troops to die for taiwan. Just beat them into submission.

Reunifying Taiwan would be a big geopolitics change. China did not want to break statu quo because China benefited a lot from present world rules. It's more economy issue that China is concerned than the military. But US is getting more and more aggressive to China. The world rules that favored China gradually disappear.

How many Taiwanese people should the PRC kill to gain their "submission"? Would 1 million be enough? or 10 million? Would the PRC then move in and dig mass graves or just wait till all the bodies rot and then go in? Which would be better for the PRC's sense of self-respect?

Poor Chinese ,these days
Speaking of poverty and the absolutely inhuman, grinding, appalling poverty of India, I came across an old article from MIT about a tragicomic effort to improve the Indian condition. I'm sure the author didn't intend it, but it was the funniest thing I had read in a while
I found this part especially hilarious
In the process, they discovered that slums actually have an advantage over other low-cost housing options in that they provide opportunities for street-level micro-entrepreneurship.
I burst out laughing so hard when I read that, I was almost in tears. Americans' capacity for naming problems out of existence is truly remarkable - they really outdid themselves with "street-level micro-entrepreneurship". But wait, it gets better...
“People make shops. People rent out spaces. Their homes incrementally grow as they gain income, gain family members,” Mazereeuw says. “They can keep adding on, so that investment keeps growing and their assets keep growing.”
That's "investment" and development in India. Spawning guttersnipes and urchins to beg and rob in the streets engage in "street-level micro-entrepreneurship" is "gaining family members" and "growing assets".

There was a time when I would been aghast at myself for mocking the destitute so viciously, but since it's India all I feel is :omghaha:

Public opinion and good will. Chinese are still holding out hope for peaceful reunification. There's a lot of Taiwanese working in mainland China. Taiwanese celebrities are popular in China. Basically no one wants to go to war unless Taiwan formally declares independence or goes nuclear.

what a victim card. China wants to save taiwanese lives and therefore it doesn't just bomb taiwan into submission but you won't side with China. but the u.s. wanted to fight China to the last taiwanese while making money off of taiwan by selling it weapons and your perfectly fine with that? 🤦‍♂️

It depends on the number Taiwan will submit at. PRC will do whatever it takes.
