Syrian protesters storm Russian embassy in Libya

Syrian protesters have stormed the Russian embassy in Libya a day after Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution on Syria.

Syrian protesters stormed the Russian embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Sunday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “no one, including Russian diplomats, was injured in the attack.”

“Libyan authorities have expressed their apologies and assured us that the incident will be thoroughly investigated and that the security will be provided to our diplomatic mission in Tripoli,” the statement said.

On Saturday, witnesses said Syrian protesters also stormed the Syrian embassy in the Australian capital, Canberra.

Australian police officials said a “number of men forced entry” to the Syrian embassy in Canberra and “caused extensive damage to the ground floor” of the building.

On Saturday, Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council. Moscow and Beijing rejected the draft as “unbalanced.”

The 13 other members of the UN Security Council have supported the draft resolution.

Li Baodong, the Chinese ambassador to the United Nations, said on Saturday that under the current circumstances China “maintains that to put undue emphasis on pressuring the Syrian government… or impose any solution will not help resolve the Syrian issue.”

On January 27, the UN Security Council met to consider the draft, which was presented to the UN body by Morocco and supported an Arab League plan that called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign and hand over power to a deputy to form a national unity government “with the opposition within two months.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on January 31 that the draft resolution would pave the way for a “civil war” in Syria.

The Syrian government says “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are responsible for the unrest in the country that broke out in mid-March 2011, and it is being orchestrated from abroad.

This comes while the West and the Syrian anti-regime groups blame the government for the turmoil.

Guess the Syrians understand that Americans aren't so evil as you think. Assad leader and protector of the Syrian people who ask for American help from their own leader.

Also its kind of like helping Germany and Japan get back on its feet instead of wiping them out.

There are Libyan mercenaries fighting with Syrian forces inside Syria posing themselves to be members of Free Syrian Army.

If these Libyans can pretend themselves as Syrians within the Syria, why can they not do it in Libya. The are being paid good money for pretending that.

The thing is even more extreme here: Both Libyans and Syrians speak Arabic. You cannot tell by speaking. They are whatever they claim they are, if you don't check their passports. Do you think they check their passports?
