Syrian Arab Army receives 6 New MIG-31's From Russia.

The Syrian Arab Army have received 6 new super sonic MIG-31s along with 16 newly trained Syrian pilots to fly these exceptional aircraft, apparently the purpose is to defend Syrian territories from Turkish or Israeli jets.
Moreover recently USA had deployed 6 F-16 to turkey to fight ISIS.

Nice Jet although Russia is soon going to look for alternate Fighter Jet to replace MIG-31

The last thing the Syrian armed forces needs is an high altitude interceptor fighter jet. I suppose they want to detter foreign attacks but with a measly 6 of these you wont get far.

Maybe a good response to Israel lobbing JDAM's into Syria with impunity. Possibly a threat to F15-I Ra'am operating in stand-off role over Lebanese air-space?

1-Iran does not have any MIG-31 so cannot provide any "weapon systems officers"

2-It's not so related to Israel but mostly to turkey and usa , some say its has something to do with failed Saudi-Russia paece talk over Syrian crisis. Moreover any operation against Israel currently is a ticket to hell for Syrian government.

3-I am not working for Syria air force nor am available in Scene so i cannot provide you with pics.

1-Because this aircraft was primary for Russian air force only two foreign countries obtain it ; one Kazakhstan which was one of soviet states and another Syria , so in this case we can conclude its mostly downgraded export version.

2-It is Interceptor aircraft which is not gonna be helpful for ground attack and its not suitable for Syrian war because its ground battle not air force war. Moreover the amount is less only 6 also didn't mentioned anything about type of missiles that they can equip the aircraft with it (Syrian inventory of missiles is unknown)so its mostly for showoff to Saudi , USA and turkey in my opinion.

Pilot training ; maintenance ; spares ; weapons ;
Functional ground Radars and Airbases available to Syria

How and when will they scramble

There are no shortcuts in Air defence

Maybe as i mention 6 is not enough but if look for it MIG-31 has very great radar can detect every moving object in long rang maybe the purpose is to observe all around Syria , so if an aircraft entered they can intercept it.

Air defence interceptors cannot fly 24 /7

They have to come down to base for refuelling and maintenance

Doesnt make sense. Strike aircraft and even multiroles (MiG-29s) would but super sonic interceptors? Wow.

Hmm maybe it's just a move to scare Turkey and U.S from that mini no fly zone plan. I doubt the SAA would want to pick a fight with the big wigs tho

Mig-31s can only be great assets even in low numbers when other assets are also their like AWACS, Mig-29Ms, S-300s and working as one systems to tackle air threats, it will be good defensive force against Turks or even KSA.
