Switzerland tightens sanctions on Myanmar

The Swiss government has tightened sanctions against Myanmar because of human rights concerns, including imposing individual sanctions on members of its military.

This brings Switzerland into line with steps already taken by the European Union.

The measures include a strengthening of the embargo on military equipment and goods that could be used for repression, including equipment, technology and software that can be used to monitor communications.

An asset freeze and travel ban (entering and transiting through Switzerland) have been imposed on “seven high-ranking members of Myanmar’s military and security forces who are accused of serious human rights violations”, the economics ministry (SECO) said in a press releaseexternal link. “The funds and economic resources of these individuals have been frozen and must be reported to SECO without delay,” it added.

The government said it “condemns the ongoing widespread, systematic, grave human rights violations committed by Myanmar’s military and security forces, and is deeply concerned by the deteriorating human rights situation”.

More than 700,000 members of the Rohingya Muslim minority fled in 2017 following a crackdown by the army and Buddhist militias. They are still living in sprawling refugee camps in neighbouring Bangladesh. In mid-September, UN investigators called for an international investigation and prosecution of Myanmar's army chief and five other top military commanders for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes against the Rohingya.

. . . . . .
Savages will not be allowed to get away with genocide in 2017.

No-one can save them from the misery that will soon befall them.
Thank God that even finally you agreed that BD was handling well this myanmer case by not doing military interval!

However, it is also true that Burma would not have dared to torture, bully and expel the Rohingyas had it felt the present GoB would repulse its action by military means. I think you remember when General Moeen repulsed Burmese oil digging effort in our part of the BoB.

It is not that BD should have to use military means. But, a strong leadership would have caused MM not to disturb its peace with BD. Strong leadership is what is needed in BD that would let MM think twice before it indulges in rough behavior.

Muslim countries only gave BD lip service without any action in the field or in the international organizations. They perceive BD as the lackey of a non-Muslim India. The situation was different even in 2001 when SA directly supported BD against MM.

Misleading title. These sanctions are exclusively against the military who don't seem to care. Until we see sanctions against the country in general nothing will change for the Rohingya and other minorities under Burmese military pressure.

Yes that's true too . I was actually talking about the the dream of @UKBengali , as he was dreaming of war movie style annexation of Arakan .:D

Yes totally agree . And this regime failed to act timely and that caused miyanmar dared to cross our border line several times .
I am sure that no other nation will tolerate that.

It's not new , Muslim countries mostly always gave lip services , specially the arabs .
On the other hand they demand full obedience from Non Arab countries . If you remember the problem between qatar and saudi arabia , Saudi tried to compelled BD taking it's side . BD had no other option left But to remain silent .

On the other hand Pakistan refused Saudi proposal directly . But AL govt has no such spine .

Perhaps the reason is most of our labours are not well trained and in these 10 years AL did not train them ( labours) properly imo. But that topic is not relevant here . Hope we can discuss about this topic some other days in a proper thread related AL development .:-)
